personally i think its important to look at the mother as i tend to think that most of the pups inherit her personality and guts alot of the time and they also get some shape from her aswell.

 

imo if you put a greyhound dog over a alsation bitch i have noticed the pups seem to have a squarer head similar to the bitch. if the greyhound is the mother the pups seem to have the slender more racier head of the greyhound bitch. i would say the size follows the mother to a extent aswell,

 

a greyhound over a bull bitch throws alot of pups nearer to the bulls size and stamp (heavier build) where as the bull sire over the grey bitch will throw the pups leggier and a touch more racier like the damn.

i am no breeder but i think that putting two pure breeds together will get you more consistent result because where you start from but nature is not inclined to work in straight lines nor does it pay attention to mathmatical equations it decides what the result will be as inderviduals so bitch or dog is irelevent
