One quick fox job!

Recommended Posts

After a local farmer spotted a couple of cubs outside a hole this morning, they were swiftly dealt with at lunch time. Next for the vixen!

I planned were I was going to set up an ambush to whack the vixen, as it came back to the den this evening, taking into account a strongish quatering wind that would take my scent up the gulley towards it as it would come off its lie up spot on the moor. Not ideal, but there was no other option, as it would mean an unsafe shot in any other direction.

My eldest lad and I left home at 7.30pm for a 2 minute drive down to the farm, which would get us set up at least an hour before sunset.

As we drove down the road I showed my lad where the den was, and no sooner had I showed him, he said "its there now Dad"

I pulled into the locked gateway to the farm, quietly loaded the rifle and using the barn as cover, got to about 150 yards from the den.

The vixen was 162 yards and no time for adjusting my deflection drum.

Held over a little high and a mil right. Bang, ..thud, vixen down, hit through shoulder.

All in the space of 2 mins. Certainly the quickest planned hit on a fox I have had, although the original plan went out of the window. (I have had them a little quicker when lamping)

Great shooting. I got 3 Thursday eve myself. I was out trying my hand at a few long range bunnies when they appeared out of nowhere. Have the pics up on the foxing gallery.
