Guest MOLLY
"I may not agree with what you do, but I will defend with my life your right to do it" Wilf. I work with people with mental health problems/learning disabilities. Alot of my patients are detained under the mental health act, and require 1 to 1 or 2 to 1 supervision. Now if they want a smoke, they have to go outside with their escort (1 or 2 staff). Its just outside one of the side doors so if the attack alarms go off we can quickly bundle them back inside and go and assist the staff being attacked. When this law is instigated in our hospital these patients will have to leave the hospital grounds for a ciggy. As with most mental institutions it is tucked away, and it is a very long walk to the entrance. Due to the crap staffing levels we have their is no way we can take them for a ciggy, it would leave the ward dangerously short staffed for about 30mins each time. Now you try telling someone with serious mental health problems at their worst...hence the need to be sectioned, that not only are they locked up with their freedom removed but will now have to go cold turkey from thier habit which is supposedly more addictive than heroin. Im dreading the day this happens, they wont understand it has come from the government/hospital managers, it will be us, the poor nurses who have to say no, which will take the whole brunt of it. The poor staff who have been attacked or have been restraining someone will not be allowed a ciggy either to calm their nerves. I'd love whoever made this descision to come and spend a week on my ward and tell 20 highly agitated women they cant smoke :black eye: MOLL.

jultaylor1972 2
As I read this, Im sitting with a Nicorette Inhilator puffing away, havent had a fag since Sun at 2355 hrs and its the hardest thing Ive ever done. I did stop for 8 weeks and 4 days before now but the snag is 'I love smoking' and I'll always be an 'Ex smoker'and not a 'None smoker'such as life though, the current Government seem intent on banning everything!! Guest Macnas
In Ireland, prisons and mental hospitals are except from the smoking ban.
MR TEA POT 1,287
I think the ban will be a good idea,i am a smoker,i go down the pub on a saturday night with my mother and father and girlfriend. Its a regular thing for the past 15 years every saturday always the same time. Now my mother who suffers from really bad astma said a few months back she will not go in the pub again because there was to much smoke she was struggling to breathe and having to use her inhaler quite a few times, when she got home she would be struggling for breath. Now why should she miss out on a good night out because of other peoples fag smoke,i am not having ago at smokers because i am one of them i don't smoke near my mum at all never have never will.So i think the ban is a good idea for all them folks that don't smoke but enjoy a night out. I think its up to the discretion of the hospitals here Macnas. All of the hospitals in our trust have opted to go with the ban. Although they have delayed it till April of next year? MOLL.
