Hello,

I have a 7 month cocker bitch which i,ve been doing the basics in training with and all was going well till last week ,it has started running off and just seems to be going back over .

any ideas

all of what your going through is very common in dogs, folk try training pups nearly as soon as their weaned,

the thing about it is almost all a pup learns under a certain age is soon forgotten because at an older stage in the pups development a different mindset kicks in, it may seem like it understands the commands but emotionally the pups brain cannot retain it because it has no reference to anything only its stomach,

But when at a later stage just like your pup, when its drive kicks in it has no reference to anything that has gone before, because nothing before ever in its young life had anything to do with hunting which is now its biggest motivational force, and a completely different mindset ,

All the different smells and scents now while out take on a completely new meaning for the dog, pulling the pup in a different direction, the pup doesn't want to disobey, but it has no reference to the old commands now, they dont evoke its drive, which the new sights and smells do

There will be some comments about going back to basis which are partly true but the reward for doing the basics must apply to its new hunting mindset, a dog trained through treats and praise is usually trained without distractions which is where your problem is at the minute bud,

Ball play is great for stimulating drive , not just play as such the ball becomes a reward for the correct action on a command, it gives you a handle on the dog when used as a reward and keeps the pup focused on you,, get a pup hook on the ball and its something you can carry with you while out, its simple but it works

best of luck
