The one that Lee is on about was actually telling me to work land that was not even his, after arranging for us to ferret on his land ! dick.

 

I`ve shot for one farmer for 17 yrs, only to turn up one day to find others shooting,,with permission,, no discussion,,he just let them on, and there was barely enough there to keep me busy. They are a bit inbred and don`t do well in the real world.

 

One thing though. permission or not,, no way would Ilet them speak to me like shit, You are doing them a free service, remind them of that ,then tell him to stick it up his arse.

basically im pissed off, i was walking my dog round the usual fields and walked past a barn that i have permission to shoot my air rifle, this is the only place i have permission to shoot on at the minuite as im just starting out. so i walked past and the farmer stopped me as he was about to drive out the barn in his 4x4 and asked me in an angry voice a load of questions like "is that your dog?" "when did i buy it?" "who did i buy it off" etc etc then just sped off without a goodbye or nothing. Basically hes trying to say iv nicked her... im sick of it to be honest, iv only had permission there about 2 month. Iv been going down alot to try get on his good side but everytime i ask him a question or try make conversation im getting one word answers then he walks off... im young but there no need to accuse me of thieving my dog and treating me like a retard. i dont want to be on his bad side as its the only place i can shoot but im not going to be made a mug of. sake.

What age are you? Have you ever thought of saying "Excuse me can i have a word!!". A simple discussion on your dog would solve it and you could carry on and hopefully build up some kind of friendship. As said some farmers can be funny buggers but you've got your permission so whats the problem. If i was you i'd look for something around the farm that needs fixed....something simple like a gate or a bit fence and i'd fix it and just mention it in the passing.....works a treat that...

Just my take on it....most people with ordinary jobs, an ordinary life and a bit of a social life develop this thing called social skills. Chatting to people you don't know isn't that big a deal

 

If you've been grafting on a farm from dawn til dusk since you left school at 14, too knackered to go out in the evenings, not really having collegues or friends apart from other farmers, farm hands and animals you're not really going to have the greatest social skills in the world are you.

 

As has been said before, he probably didn't know you had a dog cos you've never mentioned it, his questions were probably more to do with him checking you weren't taking a mates dog on his land, or a dog you'd only just got (and are therefore not 100% sure what it's like with stock).

 

You'll probably find he speaks to everyone like that, in which case you either grin and bear it, be polite and just be thankful for the permission. Or tell him to f'ck off and go and find yourself another farm to go on.

 

Personally if it was me, if it's a decent bit of permission, I would just tolerate the conversations with him and see it as more of one of his eccentricities rather than a reflection of the way he sees you. At the end of the day the conversations probably only last about 10 seconds and then off you go onto his farm.....does it really matter. Unless he directly accuses you of something I wouldn't worry about it.

Sounds to me as if he was really saying I dont mind a young fella shooting a airrifle at a few pigeons but a neighbour told me that lads with lurchers are up to no good stealing and coursing hares so I asked him a few questions in my own way and he acted strange

 

People here are talking as if farmers are weird antisocial creatures from the mountains, yes they are busy but their socialising is

different to townie socialising, farmers meet up at marts to gossip about neighbours etc, stop and have a chat in the co-op, see the vet, the neighbours, borrow machinery from each other, they are constantly busy, a farmyard has more visiters than most pubs these days

Ever thought people might of been on his land worrying stock with dogs ? Or a neighbour as said he seen such a coloured dog worrying stock and he was just checking it wasn't your dog?

Bit of permission the father in law as he is not allowed on with his Harris hawk any more because someone else with a hawk was cheeky to the old dear who owns the land , so she just said no hawks on the land simples ...

 

When I moved into my house over a year ago the farmers round here were abit weary of me and my dogs but now they all take the time to stop for a yarn and to ask if I've been out hunting and caught out? Give them a hand now and again and a simple wave at them and any family and workers , word will soon spread your alright .

just let the farmer know your there for a quick check about kid..."hi just gona pop up to the barn here see if there any rats or that about is that ok"??? sometimes thats all you need to let them know your there....we dont always have to hang in the window of the 4x4 talking poo to him there busy men too thats why they let you on in the first place... dont take it too heart kid farmers have there own troubles too you know...hopefully you just caught him in a bad moment... but dont listen to this crap you have to man up and tell him...yes if he is being very disrespectful or accusing you of something then of course stand up for yourself... but if you learn to play him and your doing a good job you will usually get more permission from it...but as you said as its your only bit of permission so far dont also make yourself part of the farmyard by being there everyday either....maybe hes just fooooked off looking at ya lol......whatever happens hope you get it sorted sure....goodluck

U just have too look at the time of year it is it's spring things will be calving and lambing then he has all the cows or sheep too get out onto the grass make sure every machine will work cos he will be getting grass fever bye now just don't pay much attention too farmers at this time of year my boss gets close too having mental break down at this time year I just stay out of he's way and keep my head down

wouldnt look too much into it.. not everyone is out to get you! .. one of the permissions i have the farmer was very sharp with us for a while.. that was when he could even be bothered to say anything.. they are busy blokes and usually pretty tired.. i bet youve snapped at people cos' your tired.

 

dont know how you got he thinks your dog is knicked from him asking questions.. he might of just been trying to take an interest..

offer to give him a hand with something.. we always offer to help every time we see the farmers.. most of the time they dont want or even need it, but the fact your asking is a good thing to them...even if he doesnt like you he will warm up to you otherwise you woudlnt have your permission would you!

the farmer who was funny with use now gives us LOADS of fresh beef for free (too much really!) hes stopped the pheasent lads giving us trouble and even told us to tell them to piss off if they say anything as we are respectful of his land and they arent really... just because we didnt bite back when he was sharp and we stayed polite... offered with help and looked after his land.

 

plus if you go around thinking "im a youngun and people will treat me like shit regardless" ... then they will....

i deal with a lot of farmers and am only just starting to pick up permissions they are wary of dogs and strangers but most are spot on once you get to know them or find a common interest/ground. farmers are use to people knickin there stuff destroying there livlihoods etc ,like others have said he cant be that against you otherwise he would of told you to
