Fred I've had one of these for years, nearly 30!! For an 'off the peg' skinner n gutter they do the job very well. Though I did grind the 'top drop curve' (dunno the propper name!) down as a cutting edge too. Though I'm determined to get a 'Midnight made' doobie as soon as... Yer Fred, though it ain't a gut hook in its propper sense, simply ground the top edge near the point, the knife can be used either way. Though did feck up the minute I did it (years back) and popped it back in its sheath same as always and went right through the side of it splitting the stitches. Like I said I bought it years back Fred, there used to be a little shop in Southport that specialised in allsorts of cutlery, with one window chock full of quality outdoor knives, a kid back then (16/17), I was looking for a genuine skinner and asked the old bloke behind the counter, he said he had a 'new' range just in from the states that he orderd and hadn't had time to display yet, produces a big box, with each in bubble wrap and we both opened them up and laid 'em all on the counter. I would have taken any but he said there was a skinner in the box and that one I bought. Think it cost about £12. Bought a few knives there over the years, never a bad 'un, usually on recomendation from the bloke. You just don't find shops like that anymore.

midnight 657
id say £250 -£300 there are very few makers that will follow what you want that close , its still an art form and most want to have there stamp on it . thats a bold statment on the schrade knife !! all knives could be better , and bladesmiths and knife makers will allways find fault on any knife . is it because its cheap and does the job that its so good ? not many knives could with stand 30 years of use , wear and tear and re sharpening , in the 5 years i was a butcher iv never seen the knives we used most, last longer than a year , and as you know there allways sharp or sharper than a razor !! if i was you and want that spec followed to the letter i would go to stuart mitchell of sheffeild , 3rd generation knife maker . world class and time served . for price to quality ratio he has to be the only choice stuarts knives are collectable imidiatly after you commision them . all with laser engraved details , with steel choice year of manifacture etc . not picking a fight here , but what are you lot skinning with all these knives ? i dont use a knife for a rabbits etc , just nip off the head and feet with a little sharp thing. but for deer i need more than 2" cutting edge and i want real contored blade designs to have control for detailed areas and i dont want to leave meat on the hide or hide on the meat , i try to skin mine while there warm and only skin legs and neck with the knife and punch the rest out . as i say im not picking a fight i sell loads of these skinner knives , it just seems lots are more utility /hunters in a small size . if you google stuart he has a great website , you can tell him i sent you over . he is a really nice fella and gets strsaight on with it . all the best , matt. irishnut 297
the handle looks the same, but i want seperate finger guard and pommel, and short blade. unfortunately i know what i want lol now i must decide if i can justify the expense, probably going to be twice my original estimate, but i can't use it twice as much lol until i decide, we will continue to use our cut down mora knives.
