RUINATION OF LURCHERS

Recommended Posts

i think the one big thing that could help unify the show guys and the working guys would be some kind of uniformity of thought or consistency of judging, using guys that have never worked their dogs no matter how qualified through racing, breeding or indeed judging kc hounds is where shows fall flat, we don't need a standard set out (god forbid) but honesty and integrity are sadly lacking. someone whos torn their arse jumping fences at night in a hurry is far more preferable than mrs hyphenated ladeeda

A letter i wrote to the shooting times 30 years ago.

During the last couple of days there have been many posts on breeding off lurchers that have either jacked or had injuries early in their life and it got me thinking about the general demise and quali

good post this .i agree with every thing you say .years ago there were very very good strains around the country ,all tried and tested and worked by good dog men with a good standard of expectation an

That imho would make showing even more seriouse having those who have walked the walk just judgeing lurcher shows after all its just supposed to be fun and not taken too seriouse as some would have us believe.

but maybe just maybe being more serious could be a good thing with proper working lads putting up proper working dogs and the pretty dogs that have never 'walked the walk' would fade into the past

I agree with Del, making it more "professesional" would just encourage the show ponies to be more "professional". Most judges (i don't show dogs) do a competent job, leave the highly formal poncing about within KC circles............

lets cut to the chase so to speak ,lurcher shows have done the lurcher itself a lot of good they are far better looked after nowadays than they ever were in years gone by and for the dogs themselves that has to be a good thing .yes there are loads more out there that are not being worked at least not to any degree but to say that the shows have ruined the working traits is wrong there are still working minded people out there still breeding the best to the best whether its ferreting lamping or the other thats banned just because they dont broadcast it in big cup competitions like it used to be doesnt mean its still not thriving . the big land that is/was famous for the quality of running is still being plagued as much as it ever was by the day boys. same as lamping, the ones who want it bad enough still do it the showing and racing has become very popular but imo not at the expence of the working lurcher .the one thing that i am adamant does spoil the working lurcher is the liars that show and race their dogs and downright lie about how they work their dogs when quite a lot never see any kind or prey. but the the folk who really work their dogs will always know where to go to find a good working line same as its always been
