minion 29
Just wondered how many dogs people keep at one time. I only have two. One lurcher and one terrier. They are both young so i'm not really considering another dog for a while(well perhaps one for coursing, but my wife has other ideas) but one of my worries would be ending up with two many dogs to work and train properly. I understand that as a dog gets older the natural thing is to bring in a n apprentice to take over when the older dog retires, but I saw a guy walking four lurchers at a show a few years back and remember wondering how he has the time to give them all sufficent work. It's easy to get carried away when it comes to puppies, but I think you are better with one good dog that 3 okay ones. What does everyone else think? Lennard 10
I have one and probably get a young one in a couple of years. In my circumstances (hunting with dogs illegal, small fields) a relative obedient dog saves a lot of stress. And to get it you need time one on one. Depends what you want and how much time you have I guess. It helps when your spouse is just as obedient
smallmouth 1
Exactly as Lennard says.............except the bit about the obedient spouse...........
MikeTheDog 153
i like to keep at least a couple terriers. i work em 3 days a week or so and usually have one laid up for this or that. i only have the one running dog. he's enough for me, but i'd be fecked if something was to happen to him. keep the dogs you have the work, and time for. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I envy you self-employed guys with your spare time ..I have two lurchers at a time so as to keep each other company whilst at work, very handy when teaching the new dog basic obedience as it's more inclined to stay sitting/down/etc if the old dog is doing same. Entering to my chosen sport is easy enough for my lurcher, she switched on very quickly and seems to know what it's all about and coming along nice ..

Guest CharlieC
I have 8 dogs, I would have more but I have built kennels the entire length of my garden and dont have much space to build any more. 3 are working lurcher (one semi retired) and one is a pup. the others are staffies and a boxer. They cost me nowt to feed as they are brood bitches and a stud dog and the money I make from them feeds all of them, plus a bit extra, and I also get a lot of meat off a butcher mate so Im pretty lucky all in all. I work from home too so my time is my own and I dont have anyone breathing over my shoulder (there was someone breathing down the phone though recently...... .............Phil LLoyd hasnt ecscaped from the loony bin again has he????????? Just kidding
Guest reload
This is a good thread!! ...It is far to easy to get over dogged and even more so with with dogs the work!! I only own one and maybe a pup in the new year depending!! But thats my limit for my situation!! But you see fellas with a fair few dogs and it does make me wonder....!! The thing that gives it away to me and makes me laugh is these BIG ol Fat fellas...who have trouble walking round a showground let alone keeping half a dozen dogs fit!! Fat lurcher men make me laugh my ass off. Some people treat dogs like cars if it breaksdown or dont do what they want then they buy another and another and another!! Guest Pat
Ive just got the one lurcher shes coming on great and two terriers one just a pup and Im getting no more as this is enough as the pup will work with my russell I hope to work the patches of cover on some of my permission and put little dirty rats out of there missery and hopefully the odd fox as well . and then In a few years if the sealyham pup works well to fox I will breed of it when I need another terrier and keep a pup hopefully put a sealyham dog over her if I can find one. happy Christmas to everyone as well Edited December 13, 2004 by Pat

smallmouth 1
Self employed fellas having more spare time............its far from the truth I'll vouch for that, if it wasn't for R Lass helping me out by exercising my Lurcher weekday mornings, I'd still be dogless.............
