rob190364 2,594
Does anyone have a hunting dog that is quite effective as a guard dog aswell? not talking about a full on protection dog, just one that will react to strange noises, be wary of strangers in the house, bark when people knock etc.? In the past I've had dogs that didn't even bark when someone knocks on the door, but then all of a sudden they got to a certain age and started doing so. My current lurcher is nearly 2 years old and I'm not joking she is feckin useless as a guard. Obviously noone would expect a lurcher to be a top class guard dog but my ferrets would act as a better guard than her!! For example, if someone knocks she doesn't even move, if there's a noise outside she doesn't move, the window cleaner went round the back the other day and started working and she saw him at the window, guess what....didn't move!! Plumber came in to check the boiler, I deliberately let him walk through the living room first and she just came over to greet him. I'll be getting a guard dog at some point, but I was just wondering what other peoples dogs are like? I would imagine most terriers would be good alarm dogs, but what about others (lurchers, gundogs etc.)?
GrCh 856
mine barks at strange noices and strange people appraoching the house but with people she's gentle as they come and she would NEVER bite anyone.
Paid 935
Actually wish mine was more like your Rob, he barks at fecking every movement!
Born Hunter 17,832
If there's so much as a mouse fart my lurcher and terrier are up looking for friend or foe. They're not really agressive but bark like f**k and scare most people that should'nt be about. Strangely though, my lurcher is quiet in the kennel?

paulus 26
the old bitch in the house will bark if someone knocks the door, the 2 in the kennel are quiet all day and night but if someone other than me goes near the kennels after dark they will go nuts, my eldest lad coming back from the town early one morning, half pist, decieded to take a short cut and climb over the back fence, big mistake, he had to climb over next doors and then over the side fence
skycat 6,174
The Picardy lurchers and the Airedale crosses are brilliant house dogs: and the big Picardy dog is definitely not kindly inclined towards strangers at all. Some Collie crosses can be very good guard dogs, but a lot depends on the lines, and also how they are treated at home. Dogs that have been hammered into quiet submission aren't likely to have the confidence, or feel that it is their place to guard the home.
Malt 379
My small JRT barks like feck at any strangers, and this in turn sets the lurcher off. They're not aggressive in any way, but they make a racket which would be enough to put anybody off if they were trying to make a silent entry into the house.
rob190364 2,594
I sort of expected mine to be a half decent alarm dog with her having both wheaten and bull in her make up, but nothing! Despite her age she's still fairly immature so I'm hoping it clicks when she gets a bit older (as it did with those other two). It's not a massive big deal if she doesn't as it's not what I got her for. I know it was just a general comment Skycat, but she definitely hasn't been hammered into quiet submission so it's not that. Chid 6,640
The ridge x grey I had would of bitten you if he didn't know you and no one was about .. My 2 big dogs will only bark if they hear a car they don't recognise or see someone they don't , collie x will have a random bark if he hears me or the lass speaking to a stranger , neither would bite I don't think
Carraghs Gem 1,675
Nope all mine are soft as shite, except the working sheepdog, she hates everyone except me my fella and my dad, she not only kicks up a fuss, she would take a bite out of anyone who enters the property unescorted
Bosun11 537
First off let me say, I fecking hate constant barkers, its one thing I really will not tolerate. All my mutts are taught from an early age that barking is not allowed, with the exception of strange noises, which I will then investigate with them and they will get 'some' praise. With all my dogs this has been the case and couple this up with a decent life and free run of 'our' space (garden) when all are at home, then they soon know what is theirs to protect and act accordingly. We had an attempted burgalary to one of the houses at the back last year, it was my dogs that raised the alarm and woke the householders up, though they have their own dog. Both neighbours from the back came round the next day with dog treats by way of saying thank you, with one commenting that she didn't realise we had two dogs until the night before! Absolutely agree with that Bosun. I like my dogs to sound the alarm but to shut up when I tell them to. I can't stand dogs that persistantly bark at nothing and everything. Leaves me on edge all the time Edited to add; why don't mods have a 'Like this' button? Might be a bit controversial I suppose...
