What a dreadful example to set to a young enthusiast. With top prizes only bettered in Ireland by Shanes or Birr, a top terrier judge brought in from England - what on earth could you see wrong with that? I would suspect its because you didn't have the balls to enter or you entered and didn't win.

 

. Young Man too his beating like a 'man' when he must have been very disappointed when his dog was pipped in the last few yards by a very fast little terrier with an amazing final kick. I think he could teach many about sportsmanship and I hope he continues to enjoy his dog and competing.

 

You meanwhile appear a totally poor sportsman who sounds off behind an alias. Barrie Wade is a fine terrier man and I would suspect he has forgotten more about terriers than you will ever know.

 

Everyone of course is entitled to their opinion but perhaps you would let 'Young Man' know how credible your opinion is. Now since you voiced your opiniion of the judging the show and virtually everything else I would challenge you to let us know :

 

1. What shows you have organised?

2. What top prizes you have won with lurchers, terriers and whippets?

3. When you have judged whippets, lurchers and terriers?

young man like albertj has asked me to explain i never said your prizes where'nt the best never said your terrier judge was bad it was more your lurcher judge alot of people thought was poor ive never organised a show because i wouldn't be annoyed with people crying about there pet not winning the working class won a few prizes afew years ago mostly working class with a working dog and i havent judged a show never been asked to and if i was i wouldn't do it not my thing now thats cleared up as for not having the balls to enter or i entered him and he didn't win lol

and just to clear it up i dont have a problem in general with rose but think the judge should have experience in all the classes that there judging plus alot of her friends seemed to win alot and thats why i wouldn't be a good judge ive no experience in whippets or saluki crosses so i wouldn't agree to judge them i thought it was poor albertj last year it was a better show but suppose that might of had something to do with the filth watching everthing

 

I was disappointed that there were terriers there that were not shown. The PSNI guys who were there were ordinary 'beat' cops who were simply interested in the dogs. I spoke to them to see why they were there.

Thanks for letting me know how to run Game Fairs and terrier & lurcher shows - I am only the person who launched the first sustainable Irish Game Fair in 1979 and who agreed to host one of the first major terrier & lurcher shows in 1980! Our aim is to be inclusive and encourage as many people as possible enjoy their dogs.

Firstly anyone who knows me will tell you that my motivation in starting the fairs and continuing to run them is not for money. Regarding Ballywalter it might interest you to know that the BASC cancelled the fair in 2010 because they were losing money at a much smaller event with no real prize money.We took it on with only a few months notice to rescue it knowing that we were going to lose at least £10 - £15,000 the first year and it would be at least 4 years before it would make a profit. In addition everyone who purchased a ticket a Ballywalter for the first two years got a free ticket to Shanes. Quite frankly I could have simply run Shanes Castle and had a much better financial performance! I run the Game Fairs because I am passionate about country sports and want to ensure that they continue and I consider the fairs are the best way of promoting to the media and the general public that these are traditional pursuits that benefit the countryside and environment.

 

The reason why I can invest money in fairs to make them successful is because I do not need to make a profit - I retired early from my main job as a senior university lecturer and I also carry out consultancy work. To put things into perspective I have earned more in 7 weeks international consultancy work with no risk than I have made at any fair which takes a year to organise and has a huge risk.

 

Of course you have to make a profit overall because Fairs are high risk events and very largely dependent on the weather but a huge amount of what profit we make is ploughed back into sponsoring organisations , the prize fund at the next event and other events. Over the year we sponsor a huge number of events and I cannot think of anyone who has ever approached us for sponsorship who has gone away empty handed.

 

The Fairs have become a sort of 'hobby' for me which I shall continue as long as my health is good. But my interest in developing the terrier & lurcher side of things is not motivated by money at all. I see terrier & lurchers as the group most under threat and had hoped to encourage a sensible organisation with large support to emerge.

 

We pay for trophies, rosettes , prizes, rental of the ground, judges expenses etc the organising club take the entries. At a maximum of a £5 per head admission I would be delighted if you could tell me how I could make money at Ballywalter, Shanes & Birr out of the terrier & lurcher people who attend?

I don't know anyone involved except Barrie Wade (HAPPY BIRTHDAY BARRIE ) but the way the Economics of shows in general are going we will be LUCKY to have any left in 5 years and in many cases its the main chance for terrier clubs or lurcher clubs to make money, not from the show I might add usually from the raffle or tombola.With the problems accross the water in Ireland North and South. The sooner you can deal with the REAL problems over there. Support the shows if you don't like the way things are run GET INVOLVED change it for the BETTER don't just stand on the sidelines and whinge thats what A**EHOLES do. THE ENEMY YOU FACE IS APATHY AND BAD PRACTICE IN DOGWORK I SUGGEST YOU CONCENTRATE ON PULLING TOGETHER, NOT TRYING TO DESTROY THE FABRIC OF COUNTRY SPORTS.

I was talking to winner69 as my black bitch hit a dog on the way up the field as it tryed to weave in an out infront of her an she drove for the lure but I still haven't heard what colour his dog was or heat in the overs
