Borzos, Wolfhounds, Ibizans, etc. ??

Recommended Posts

Now I know that these breeds have been ruined by the KC, but supposing there was some working strains around, and there wasn't a "Ban"; would any of us consider using them in a Lurcher breeding programme ?

I ask because when Iwas at Selby, I had a craic with a couple of lads from Ireland, and they had five stunning looking Borzoi/Saluki/Greyhounds with them. They certainly looked the part, but could they actualy DO the job, the owner said they were good hare dogs, but he was selling them, so he wouldn't say they were rubbish !! LOL !!

I know that in Australia, and to a lesser extent the US, these breeds are used in running dogs, to good effect, but generaly come from working stock. This is just a hypothetical question, as I doubt there are any working type Borzois, Wolfhounds or Ibizans in the UK, but if there was, would we use them; or are we happy with what we have ?

Cheers.

did he have grey hair ....hes been breeding an running them for last 25 years

I,ve been to the canarys a couple of times and theres a type of dog over there ( can,t remember the name ) but I did wonder if you could make a decent lurcher using this breed, would certainly have excellent feet if they can deal with the volcanic rock

Must admit matey i wouldn't be reaching fr the mobile, danes have terrible health problems, are ungainly, cloddy and slow. I know they use them in Oz, but over there they will chuck any ole cross into the melting pot lol..........

great dane is only put in pig dog lines. no one puts em in running dog lines. We have so many different crosses over here because there is so much variation in the land

some good clips there kittlerox,, i ended up watching 4 or 5 difrent ones,,, theres one where you can see the ferret above ground following a sent and mooving at speed,,,but some of them are using string copes.... alot of chaps over here wouldnt ferret those rock piles,, and craks in the larva

Ive seen a Borzoi/Lurcher cross,it was,nt in a working kennel,it looked well balanced and could cover the ground.A true working type Borzoi added into a certain type of lurcher breeding would possibly make more than a useful animal, anyone got a non KC Borzoi with genuine breeding behind it ?.

My mate had a dog with about a quarter Borzoi in it in the 80's, big an fast, it could kill hares and foxes but was injury prone. I'd agree with Simo, in that there is more than enough choice here already from well tested stock.

after kittlerox put that vid up,,, ive spent a few hours watching podencos catching bunnys on difrent films ,, some good bits as well.. but heres a film i found of galgos coursing hares,, rather than a big organised meet,, this seems more like a few mates out for the day
