Pup obedience problem

Recommended Posts

I have a springer spaniel bitch pup which is around 4 months old now, i have been training her from a very early age to be a gundog and she was getting on well however a few weeks back we went away for a week and she stayed with someone else for that time, when i got her back she has not been as obedient which is no problem and can be sorted out easily but when i take her for walks and trianing she now either has to be in a confined space or on a lead because she keeps running off and no matter how much you call her she will not come back, and as you can imagine her being a spaniel she is very hard to catch and will give anyone the run around. Any ideas and help would be appriciated

Thanks

I think it may be a sign of trying to run before you can walk mate. I'm not having a pop in anyway mate but a pup at that age i would just be doing the basics, sit and heel work on the lead, certainly no retrieves. There's plenty of time for that. The most important thing is to get the dog steady and the basics 100% before doing anything else. 2 x 10 minute training sessions a day is more than enough for a 16 week old pup.

What you've been doing is 'boring' it from a very early age and now the pup wants to play rather than have constant rules all the time. Introduce training at walk times or very short periods of time...be very limited on the amounts of time you tell a very young pup to heel, sit, stay or whatever and try and make it enjoyable for the pup.
