j1985 1,984
This one came as close as your gonna get, a centremetre to one side and it would be! Open woods I can imagine some dogs doing well but dense wood I just can't see it! Quote Link to post
Guest long-tail
Dogs have been killed by them before. As for running them in woods, it depends, all woods are different. What I know is that they can just dissappear into thick cover with ease. yep Quote Link to post
beast 1,884
there are muntjac everywhere round here, evry garden, tiny wood, patch of nettles seems to hold one.almost impossible to walk the dogs without them scenting one. they pop out a youngster about every 8 months round the estate dont know if the quality of feed affects the gestation at all and they get bred almost straight after giving birth. i seen a doe still cleaning a fawn and a buck getting all excited around her. so they have 3 young every 2 years. the fawns born in winter have less chance of surviving but just as many are born as other times of the year. bucks are tough tough little critters hard to kill and well-armed. ive seen them take the fight to a dog as well, which really throws a dog which isnt 100% confident, seen some horrific injuries too, them little tusks are like razors not just a point but the back edge is sharp like a little sabre 1 Quote Link to post
baldockbanks courser 598
What is the exact law regarding shooting muntjac with a shot gun?? Common sense would say if you can shot a big dog fox with a shot gun why not a deer of the same size ( in a lot of examples)? And if on land with permission can they be flushed to a shot gun with a team of lurchers and terriers? Quote Link to post

Penda 3,341
Theres alot of munty by me and i think in years to come theres gona be alot more and there getting right in to the urban areas where you wouldnt expect to see them. Just yesterday i saw a nice munty buck on my travels on a land fill site creeping through the middle of a field with out a worry in the world.Ive hunted munty with dogs preban and i can honestly say that in thick wooded areas there slippery characters and i think it takes alot of luck and a dog that knows what its doing as ive said many times to people if they break cover into an open field i think it goes more into the dogs favoure the deer tend to panic once in the open and they know the enevitable is coming Quote Link to post
