To many kid themselves on that they have something special when the fact is they have not traveled around enough to know what special is! Honesty as well plays a big part, I don kid myself on that I

A few lurcher owners might though ...ATB Andy.

And some owners just keep quite about how good their dogs are.

Many a good dog has had a better agent, also ive heard of dogs improving in different hands one of my best was someone elses cast off, i think its i mportant tho for people to advertise good dogs as long as there not false legends so that good blood can be shared breeding plans can be followed and off spring can be bred to the right dogs, i think dogs like this only get shared between a close few which is a shame

Andy, some people like to talk and there is enough gullable listeners out there, an experienced listener can usually tell if its bullshit whats being said.

There has definetly been a few legends been born from the internet.

Think what fredthefrogs trying to say is sometimes a descent dog will need a change of hands to become an even better dog, well something along them lines which i agree with but they got to have it in them first not every dog has it in them to be something speciel just my own opinion.

pass the dog on or what ! not being funny or awkward but my dogs wont work better when my mates work them , may be its because you have a close bond and the dogs are more loyal to there owner. who have spent the time with them from pups , i m sure that a loyal dog is more relaxed and this reflects in its working ability. this sounds really stupid but i think its the same synario , when your parents watch you play sports , you try that little harder. (maybe im wrong).

a dog will work better for a person who has a close bond to it , and when i say bond, that is feeding, exerciseing, training, playing , and general welfare. ive seen hounds what have been ill treated and there so tense to make a mistake they dont hunt to there full potential , as there bond to the master isnt what it should be. now it takes time to earn a dogs loyalty and that means treat them right you will earn there loyalty and trust ,they will do there best to please you.

You are talking about the mental disposition of a hound which is a very different thing imho

A dog will RESPOND better to someone it has a close bond with, but that is not the same as working ability.......and we are talking about ability I beleive.

While undoubtedly a well cared for dog will be at the top of its game if the ability to be a good/great dog is not in the blood no amount of care will put it there, again jmho

I know some dogs that are cared for like kids, but I also know that lads who are really putting the game in front of dogs wouldnt want said dogs as a gift.....

The ONLY way for another man to improve on good blood is that they will work it more and harder and show it more tackle than the last owner.........just my very uneducated opinion.

Theres no more "wonder" dogs as folk put it than there ever was before I reckon, its just before the advent of forums like this, you only knew about dogs in your area.

For all the "bad" side of forums like this, the upside is that it has opened up the whole country and lads are free to meet up, travel, see other dogs working and generally educate yourself in ways that may not have been possible before.

Its a treat to be able to talk dogs with sensible lads and also to meet new folks who you would never otherwise have got to meet, it can open up a whole world of houndwork that you would not have seen otherwise.

And if someone has the brains to know what good sense is when he reads it, then its been a bonus to everyone really.

When it comes to biggin a dog up as some put it, then I think its pretty easy to sort the buffoons from the genuine or those who simply dont know better and innocently give their opinions.

We are always learning

I saw some threads last year about lads who were out taking big numbers of rabbits, they didnt give it the large just simply showed what they had done and theres a lot more like them who take numbers that many just would not believe.....certain idiots jumped on the thread and started withh all the "OH SHOWING OFF?...WHY DO YOU NEED TO TAKE THEM NUMBERS? ETC ETC".......What tits like that dont realise is that these lads aint showing off, its nothing to them as they are showing their dogs that sort of graft all the time but cause the idiots do f**k all or very little its a big deal to them!!

Theres lads out there laying more game on the floor in a season than some will ever do if they lived two lifetimes and its nothing to them, they do it every season, these lads aint boasting when they tell you about their dogs......they are just telling the truth!

na your dead right in that respect i was thinking more of finding there own game. more exsperience, the better obviously.

all depends on the dog as to what you put in front of them and knowing when they have had enough.

would you not say that a bond between master and dog makes a difference between ability?

i think a dog more relaxed performs better than a dog that is un easy or say afraid to put a foot wrong , but then it goes down to breeding as some breeds are more confident etc. just my opionion

i think mental disposition reflects on its ability , depending on the breeding :hmm:

I think you are talking about dogs that take a beating and to be honest, I dont think any lurcher improves with a beating, quiet the opposite in fact.........a terrier, yes but a lurcher no.

Thats just my way and opinion......
