To many kid themselves on that they have something special when the fact is they have not traveled around enough to know what special is! Honesty as well plays a big part, I don kid myself on that I

A few lurcher owners might though ...ATB Andy.

And some owners just keep quite about how good their dogs are.

A friend of mine used to say that a dog was only as good as its next run. So it has to be consistency that makes a good dog: I won't use the word 'legend' because legend is not necessarily fact. I'm sure there are many good dogs out there whose prowess has only been seen by the owner or one or two close friends.

Why worry about a dog being a 'legend' or a big name? it's what you see with your own eyes that matters, and if it suits your standards great.

I believe many dogs are hyped up either by the owners or people who have seen the dog work a few times, believe nothing.

It never ceases to amaze me at the legnths some people will go to, to create their own publicity to help themselves and therir dog become a 'legend'

legend is such a bad description in my opinion.

Bit to answer your question poacherspocket, a long working career to a excellent standard is what we should all want to achieve, and if it's a good producer even better.

Penny,do you think then thats why the majority of the "big names" have been coursing bred dogs because they were seen by more people what with running competitions and such then? Or is it that coursing dogs are just better full stop lol and therefore deserve all the plaudits? ATB Andy.

Legends are made by other peoples perceptions or imagination. In the case of dogs whether coursing, digging or any other working variety. The question is can it do what it was bred for? and secondly does it do it well. As some one pointed out in the present time of technology legends can be made on a keyboard. Word of mouth is also only a pointer as no two people will relay facts or messages in the same way. Seeing personally or on a video is a reasonable way of understanding capability. Any animal that satisfies the man who feeds it is a legend to them is it important that fame and noteriety over shadow the pleasure given by the dog.

:hmm:By the very nature of their game,.the Coursing and Racing dogs,..the 'Match Dogs and the famous Track Stars"..will of necessity, have to perform and walk the walk in front of an audience...

And as my old rabbiting pal and whippet racer used to say, 'You cannot lie when the stop watch is being held'....

So,..a lot of what goes on,..just goes on,..and other than a close knit bunch of guys being in the know,..there must be plenty of fabulous days and nights out, undertaken by good honest jukels, that few folk get to see... :hmm:

As for legends,..well,..I think as keen hunting men, we would all have to give credit, where it is due,..

For myself,...I just want to catch up a few rabbits,.have the craic,..enjoy my life,..and then,..get ready for the big adventure...

All the best, Chalkwarren...

However,..it is not realy practical to take a group of spectators on a 'conducted lamping tour' ( although I did once do a days ferreting, with 28 Min of Agriculture students, following on ).... :icon_eek:

Ive seen some dog's become legend's by simply producing a legend  simple fact was they were average and consitent at being average but also consistent in producing working stock but when they were producing working pup's they were bulled up far better than they were to sell the pup's produced  legend's are usualy a peddlar's best friend or owned by 1  ive seen some great dogs that have done fantastic thing's and wished i had owned them myself but they were never made legend's because there owner's didnt want folk knowing what they had

On the Greyhound or Whippet track, or the Coursing field, (when it was legal), "legend" status was hard to achieve but easy to proove, Ballyreagan Bob, Scurlow Champ, Good As Gold, Red Baron, Fullerton, Master McGrath, etc, were genuine Legends in their respective fields. In the Lurcher Coursing, there are many,Blondie, Lucky and others that can rightly be called "Legends"; but in the Lurcher work most of us do, lamping, foxing, etc, it's hard to proove what a dog is capable of, except to a few who see the dogs graft regularly. Some dogs ARE only "Internet Legends" and some who are REAL legends are very rarely seen or talked about, and the owners generaly want it kept that way ! They have no need to bull their dogs up on the 'net to sell puppies, these pups are produced and passed on with little fuss. In todays legal climate, we may never see REAL Legends being talked about on the 'net ever again.

Good thread, though

Cheers.

Seen a few that were supposed to be top drawer all ive got to say is one mans good dog is another mans pot licker depends on what they are being judged on more than anything i would have thought.

Seen a few good day dogs jib at hedges when theyve been run on the fen only same as lamp only dogs think it was easier to see legends when we needed the dogs to put food on the table and coin in the pocket if it could feed the village and more than a few did it was a legend as much as the specialist running in their circles and doing what they were bred to do.

Think what fredthefrogs trying to say is sometimes a descent dog will need a change of hands to become an even better dog, well something along them lines which i agree with but they got to have it in them first not every dog has it in them to be something speciel just my own opinion.
