whippet 99 2,613
na your dead right in that respect i was thinking more of finding there own game. more exsperience, the better obviously. all depends on the dog as to what you put in front of them and knowing when they have had enough. would you not say that a bond between master and dog makes a difference between ability? i think a dog more relaxed performs better than a dog that is un easy or say afraid to put a foot wrong , but then it goes down to breeding as some breeds are more confident etc. just my opionion i think mental disposition reflects on its ability , depending on the breeding I think you are talking about dogs that take a beating and to be honest, I dont think any lurcher improves with a beating, quiet the opposite in fact.........a terrier, yes but a lurcher no. Thats just my way and opinion...... it does sound that im implying beating , but i mean mental disposition could be down too no interaction. (left in kennel) health neglect etc etc. just generally poorly treated which will give them mental disposition and then they dont perform to there full potential, sad thing is people treat them like this and then exspect miracles in the field. and in these cases i can relate to joballs comment of a dog doing better in another mans hands and putting the gear in front of them as said. every dog man wants there dogs to perform to there full potential and they all treat there dogs to the highest standered in order to get this. as were all individuals there will be different standards as stated and to me a special dukel would be a dog that doesnt say no, a dog that can adapt to different quarry (all rounder), a dog with remarkable skills in dealing with quarry and marking. a good catch rate but i wil stick to my rubbish what tries hard 1 Quote Link to post
Guest vin
My dogs and my personal outlook is becoming Legendary around my mates as me being the "softest shite around". my dogs obviously reflect this status. Who needs Legends..I get a lot of fun trying to polish a turd instead...the final rewards are much more hard earned. . . Well thats what i have to keep telling myself..LOL. Quote Link to post
Guest joball
Think what fredthefrogs trying to say is sometimes a descent dog will need a change of hands to become an even better dog, well something along them lines which i agree with but they got to have it in them first not every dog has it in them to be something speciel just my own opinion. pass the dog on or what ! not being funny or awkward but my dogs wont work better when my mates work them , may be its because you have a close bond and the dogs are more loyal to there owner. who have spent the time with them from pups , i m sure that a loyal dog is more relaxed and this reflects in its working ability. this sounds really stupid but i think its the same synario , when your parents watch you play sports , you try that little harder. (maybe im wrong). a dog will work better for a person who has a close bond to it , and when i say bond, that is feeding, exerciseing, training, playing , and general welfare. ive seen hounds what have been ill treated and there so tense to make a mistake they dont hunt to there full potential , as there bond to the master isnt what it should be. now it takes time to earn a dogs loyalty and that means treat them right you will earn there loyalty and trust ,they will do there best to please you. As I said sometimes not always the case. Quote Link to post

weasle 1,119
A lad gos out lamping runs 20 rabbits dog catches 17 18 19 20 rabbits night in night out.The lad has hes sport and is back in time to get some kip to go to work the next day. Then you have a lad who dosnt work a stamnia packed dog,go`s out all night runs a 100 plus catching half of them. Who has the better dog? As far as im concerened its the dog with the very high catch rate,Thats why the numbers dont tell the whole story as far as im concerened. . Quote Link to post

As far as im concerened its the dog with the very high catch rate,Thats why the numbers dont tell the whole story as far as im concerened. . thing is weasel that the catch rate persentage goes down the more rabbits you run in a night,,,,manys the time ive had 15-20 without the dog missing,,,,but the dog still went on a and cought 30-40 or more,, but by then she may have missed 10 or more... so in some ways your correct the numbers dont tell the hole story,,,,but on the flip side ,neither does the high persentage. unless that high persentage is on a real big score.... FUJI 17,209
I think it's far easier to talk of catch rates with the coursing types? 2/3 or 5/5 and so on but rabbits and lamping I don't really think you can? Certainly not on big hauls? Would I rather have a dog capable of taking 18/20 bunnies or one which could bag 50/65? I'll take the 50 dog thankyou very much lol. ATB Andy 2 Quote Link to post
weasle 1,119
A good horse is a good horse wether it runs over 6furlongs or 4 mile. One just has more stamina. Either one aint much use if you need the other. This picture sold for 120 million dollers its shit but it has a name. Quote Link to post
Guest joball
.or the fox dog who pulled them several nights a week, they rarely turned the dog a third time and the dog was rarely bitten or injured and just worked like a machine... Alright simo, just a quick question have you ever seen such a dog or owned one? cheers Quote Link to post
tia.kins 56
LEGENDS........ Dogs dont make themselves legends, its the owners account of the dog or some one elses tales. Remember that. All that should count is your own measured values and your own realistic requirements. I bet there are plenty of heroic Lurchers out there, it doesnt need to be a measured quantity, and given the variation of game and terrain across the uk, unless you have walked corner to corner and the land inbeteen with that dog, then it can never be a truely measured quantity..... so in reality a dog is only ever gonna be a "local" Legend. I am not sure its a wise move to seek out Legends or Heros that you havent had first hand dealings with. Far better in my mind to mix with what you know works for you in your "manor" The internet has blown folks expectations about dogs massively out of proportion .......we are simply ruining our future..... So many Legends now days....and dogs related to Legends...the term iself almost becomes Blahzay ................meaningless Edited May 4, 2012 by tia.kins 2 Quote Link to post
