To many kid themselves on that they have something special when the fact is they have not traveled around enough to know what special is! Honesty as well plays a big part, I don kid myself on that I

A few lurcher owners might though ...ATB Andy.

And some owners just keep quite about how good their dogs are.

Consitancy for all its running years then passing on the qualitys it had to its offspring

Hey up Juckler matey ;) ..hope all is well? Yeah i'm very much of the same opinion as yourself on this matter but am still interested to see how/what others decipher a "great" dog? ATB Andy.

Great debating thread Andy  My personal opinion is some dogs were made "false" legends via a careful advertising campaign, Merle could of become one of these "legends". Respected legends in various areas of lurcherwork seem to had made a reputaion through their work in the field, and as you mention longevity, skills and that certain "something" is required with many more cementing that legendary status by producing stock better than themsleves, dogs such as Punch, Dancer, Pie, Blue, Blondie, Merlin, Eve, Seagull and a few more. These dogs attained legendary status through actions, not rumours or being bullied up......

Nowadays "legends" can be made overnight on the internet without any real substance.......

As Andy says, only heard of this Lucas dog on THL, i would say are there any legends today?????? Fred mentions a dog which could bring down a red stag pre ban) he would class as a legend, not for me im afraid, a legend is a dog that excells at its chosen vocation, shows this certain extra something week in week out for many a season and even better if if can pass on its attributes, especially if these attributes are increased......Dare i say it but "lengendary status" is that certain x factor, before the ban you may have had several dogs who regularly caught 5/5 winter hares but on of those would stand out due to an extra quality, perhaps the ability to do it several days a week, or do it on any land, or do it because along with its skill it had the constitution to do it regularly.............or a ferreting dog that marks, catches bolters, marks kills, but does it with that extra quality...........or the deer dog that pulled a a dozen a week, but pulled various species, in various different environments and made it look easy................or the fox dog who pulled them several nights a week, they rarely turned the dog a third time and the dog was rarely bitten or injured and just worked like a machine..........They all may have that certain something that makes them legendary BUT its not a tangable thing, its not easily explained but when you see it, you know it.............

Some folk big up their own dogs.We all know the type that only talk about their own dogs and don`t entertain the fact someone else has a gooden.Usually they`re the type that rarely do anything with their dogs.To me a dog`s done f--k all unless I or a dog man I respect has seen it doing the business.

Interesting post Si and i agree totally we always did everything with the running dogs ferreting as pups then lamping and coursing when the corn was cut or it was too frozen to be out at night we classed a good dog as one that could kill a hare well in the day but also fulfill the other roles of all round provider.

Thats exactly what i was meaning in my 1st post when i said about owners with the gift of the gab..some folk on the strength of perhaps one good shift from the dog they then hype them up to the point when they convince not only themselves but everyone who is prepared to listen to their shite that the dog is the be all and end all in lurcherdom and thats more the case via the internet! I'm not saying this is always the case with these dogs which are spoken of so highly but there is no doubt that some dogs who are given the pedestal treatment are nothing better than your average cur imo? Long before the t'internet and what goes with it you still got to hear from the genuine lads in the game throughout the land about a good dog in whatever it's chosen sphere...very rarely was the word on the grapevine wrong..yes i am an old fecker lol...you only have to read on here about the Lucas dog? Jeez i'm totally confused.com with that one lol. ATB Andy. ;)

As you've said, consistency is a must, but what always sticks in my mind are the one off rare catches. The ones where you think that dog hasn't got a cat in hells chance of catching that...and it does! These courses, kills, catches always stick in my mind many years later and I think these always help you put a dog in the upper echelon of canines.

yes an some shite dogs are made great in capable hands.....

See, I read that a lot Fred but I wonder?, my opinion is that a shite dog in the hands of lads who really graft them would just break down, don't you think?

I can accept that certain lads can get more out of dogs than other lads, but I don't accept that you can turn shite into gold at all.....all you can ever get is slightly better shite IMHO.

What do you reckon matey?
