hedz31 1,308
Best dog i ever seen on red stag's was a coursing dog x deerhound/grey that dog pulled plenty in the open fantastic dog if thing's wasnt going it's way when it pulled though it wouldnt stop and if a red stood it would lose it's bottle it was the same with fallow buck's and was never really run on them it was a good hind and doe dog though just lacked the bottle if thing's got tough it was bred to a few bull bred bitch's and never produced feck all though but you could never take away the fact that the dog could and did regular pull red stag's in the open Quote Link to post
hedz31 1,308
something i would love to see.......not in my life time i dont think certainly not now its banned........an if you think a dog waiting for red to be hindered in some way aint a deer dog then your taslking pish aswell......once a dogs had a proper tumble with a big red they soon learn to realise they cant handle them on the straights an a mistake is needed on deers behalf for dog to take em........most reds taken are by some luck or event on deers part or its a sickly or weedy specimen....thats my take on things an ive run a fair few pre ban........ Utter bollox that fred ive seen it plenty time's with my own eye's your hard pushed to find a dog that can get on term's pull and hold a red stag that's why they usualy use 2 dog's a runner and puller and a dog that can hold when a red stag is down 1 dog can hold them if they get it right and dont grab there back feet and arse and hesitate and get there face kicked in or let them up,ive also seen plenty get straight lined and also seen plenty jack but your wrong dog's can and did take them fair and square in the open something i would love to see.......not in my life time i dont think certainly not now its banned........an if you think a dog waiting for red to be hindered in some way aint a deer dog then your taslking pish aswell......once a dogs had a proper tumble with a big red they soon learn to realise they cant handle them on the straights an a mistake is needed on deers behalf for dog to take em........most reds taken are by some luck or event on deers part or its a sickly or weedy specimen....thats my take on things an ive run a fair few pre ban........ freelance 448
I think Hedz is right..just because i and others ain't done it most certainly doesn't mean it ain't been done, dogs purpose bred for the job which mine were NOT would be far more up to the task than what i had back then? I know lads over in Ireland who have dogs capable of the feat and their word is good enough for me! ATB Andy. Again i agree with Andy, i can only speak from what i have seen with my own eyes, and that's my own old minshaw dog that was only 24 ish to the shoulder and his cousin that was only 23 and half to the shoulder. These are the only dogs ( apart from a couple of other closely bred and similar sized dogs ) i have seen taking reds and were all hinds apart from a not a bad size yearling/pricket/spiker . I have never seen a brace of well bred and big bull crosses specially bred for that job, so maybe Hedz is right, also i have only seen them taken slipped from motor on a roadside and not from a motor drivin land if that makes any difference. FUJI 17,327
have you lost any dogs through injury with a red stag in the past ? I've seen a dog killed outright when tackling a hind..a big lump of dog he was too,he broke his neck while attached to the hock of a hind when they dropped into a bit of a ditch with a little stream running through..it looked nothing out of the ordinary, more just a crossing through the stream where livestock had trodden the banks down on both sides..infact i seen it's half sister break it's neck in almost identical circumstances on a Roe...ATB Andy.
