i have a saluki cross (he has just turned 1) i havent really trained him if im am honist i have taken him out with other dogs that are good and he sort of picked it up fairly fast he has run 3 big rabbits ;) caught 2 ( run with his brother) and countless rabbits but when lamping on his own he doesnt seems like he is intrested or pay attention when lamps on does when hes with anouther dog i am worried i might have ruined him!!! running with anouther dog. any advice on how i can change this would be much respected

What you find with salukis especially pures they hunt for them selves not for you. They and x.s with a large percentage of saluki will think is it beneficial or of interest to them, this is one of the reasons why they tend to take time maturing and also get a reputation of being less bidable than other dogs. As for lamping ,your dog is only 1 year old let it grow up and mature at its own pace when you feel it is showing keeness more than that of a pup that will basically chase any thing that dares to move let it learn its trade on some easy daytime stuff preferably the long eared ones but bunnies at a pinch, once it has learned that it can catch what it is slipped on then you can let it start following the beam,it is a learning curve for them, some do it automatically and others have to be encouraged to run if it is made interesting for them then half the battle is won if you are easily disheartened then saluki stuff and may be even coursing may not be the thing for you ATB Edited by desertbred

The problem you're having is the one you have stated yourself: you haven't trained the pup, just taken him out with another dog. Your pup has learned everything he knows from another dog, rather than learning to respond to you, the owner. This is a common problem in dogs which have bonded and identify with other dogs rather than humans.

Sure, other dogs can teach a pup a lot more than we ever could about hunting, chasing and catching, but we need our working dogs to work with us as well as each other. Unless you work with your pup on a one-to-one basis, just you and the pup, it won't understand that YOU are the means to it having fun, chasing and catching.

You should take the pup out on its own, just the two of you. Play games with the pup, teach it that YOU are the teacher, not the other dog.

I always take pups out alone at least twice a week, even though they are exercised with the rest of my dogs every day. Without that one-to-one training, you will find much harder to get the pup to listen to you and focus on what you are telling it.

For example: if the pup has only ever watched the other dog running the beam, it will be concentrating on the other dog, it is responding to what the other dog does, rather than learning for itself what to do. And your pup is still very young, as has already been said, Saluki types are slow to mature mentally as well a physically.

I would go right back to basics: teaching a recall which is based on something like tug training: this is how you get the dog to see you as the instigator of fun, and later work. Get the dog responding to you in lots of different situations. But don't run before you can both walk together. I would work on sending the pup out to retrieve a dummy in the dark, a dummy you throw, then light up with your beam. That way you can show the pup what you want from it, but you must get that bond first.

Lamping should be about the two of you working as team, and you don't need more than the two of you: other dogs just make an already exciting situation even more exciting, and the pup is learning to depend on the other dog, not on its own instincts and skills.

I've sent you a pm.

A perceptive , common- sense reply, that explains some of the pitfalls of entering a pup ,and, more importantly , how to avoid them.
