johnrthrfrd 223
Has any body found collie crosses to clever some times, I mean if they think they don't have much chance on a rabbit won't chase it or just go through the motions. The fields were I take mine are bordered by a nursery with a fence around it and the bunnies come through the fence into the fields soon as they see the dog they just nip back through the fence to safety, the dog seems to no now that she has no chance of catching them and will stand looking at them to see if there are any a bit further out in the field she has a chance at I have 2 bedlington terriers and they chase out seem to think they can catch anything. So the question is are collie crosses to clever sometimes. Atb John. Ps she is a collie grey. Whippet grey x collie grey. Quote Link to post
Chid 6,537
Yes but the cleverness can also be a bonus Quote Link to post
riohog 5,701
it seems to show up more in older dogs with a lot of sheepdog in them , they have a tendancy to pick and choose there runs not all but alot do this smart but can be very frustrating Quote Link to post
Gaz_1989 9,539
I've heard this too. Think I'd prefer a game little dog who tries its all 100% of the time and catches 5/10 than one that picks its runs and stalks down the lamp and catches 9/10. Each to there own though Quote Link to post
DogMagic 461
Try putting snares on the pop holes and go back later to collect your catch. Also try dropping a longnet at night when there in the field, then disturb them so they get caught on there way home. Quote Link to post

BrianSteven72 369
seen this a few times with collie x if they dont fancy it they kid on they dont see it frustrating at times and as we all know sometimes the rabbit sitting next to the fence runs out in to the field or up and down the fence when the dog runs it and the most unlikely one is the one the dog gets , is the collie x running clever or just plain jacking i will leave the answer to that one for someone else ! border lad 1,047
in my opinion, the dog is running clever, had good collie crosses from late 50s, and seen alot work, that is for edible, nothing else, surely, a good dog knows, wether he can catch it or not, and come back safe without being smashed up, I have a Salukigrey/whippet, and he does it, look on salukigrey/whippets, and you will see my dog, ((((( what is the good of a dog running around at breakneck speed, for a couple of rabbits, FFs get a grip, and paying vet fees,to boot then your dog is layed up for a month or two and never the same dog again, give me a dog that is able to use his brain, every time, 9 Quote Link to post
morton 5,368
Its frustrating for the dog sometimes when it knows better than the owner. 4 Quote Link to post
albert64 1,882
my dogs first season he was alway injuring his face and shoulders i was forever glueing or stapleing him up because he'd have a go at anything even though he had no chance of catching it, thank f**k he's learnt hopefully he'll last me longer Quote Link to post
littlefish 585
Try putting snares on the pop holes and go back later to collect your catch. Also try dropping a longnet at night when there in the field, then disturb them so they get caught on there way home. That way you are showing that you are smarter than the bunnies and the dog . cantona 310
all dogs if worked hard will steady up and not run flat out at uncatchable quarry, ive had it in my bedde cross, both bull crooss, and a saluki cross. Quote Link to post
doga 50
the trouble with hitting the same ground time after time is the dog learns were the rabbits are and go to,to many fruitless attemps at the rabbits sours the dog and creats those bad habbits or choosing runs, achange is as good as a rest, keep away from the rabbits their and use another method.
