Think youvshould get the experiance first before ordering a bird ,as the bird always.suffers not the person

You are a cock grovsey lol. The man's looking advise, not a lecture!

Steer clear of people like him bullseye

You talk out ur ass majority of poeple now days have never sent time out hunting and then go and buy one without know much at all cos they can.then fins its not for them or there Harris is screaming in the garden so sell up .

So by saying spend a season.with someone makes me a cock then ur coments make u a prick

Reason no one wants to help is the shear amount of people getting birds, just go on iff and see how many people intro every day on it and think.if the people asking for mentors, the sport is A MESS and I bet the guy u ordered the bird of did not ask u about experience as at the end.of the day its about the birds not people and the market is a flood with Harris hawks and a lot of them are vocal due to mistakes .

I started with a redtail and.always recommend everyone to start with one as learn far move bird managment with a red ,I had a good mentor around 15yrs ago and I fly falcons

yeah like i say earlier don't really expect people to be like that because so many people get a bird then can't be arsed then sell it on birdtrtader a few weeks/months later!!! but to be honest if I'm not given a chance than what do you expect?? just because the dick heads before me do it don't mean I'm gonna!! i know for FACT I'm gonna be a good bird owner i just need someone to give me a chance!!

i will keep trying to get a mentor and infact an old friend has given me a number of someone that practices falconry and will be getting in touch with them next week!!

fair play for your views and like i said your right in what you say

Im with Grovsey on this.. this is a grim time of year when many many people announce they're getting a bird, have no mentor, no experience not even been out with anyone in the depth of winter to get hands on.. By the Christmas the questions start.. Its noisy, It wont come back, its screaming, it wont chase rabbits and on and on... Knowing what to do is one thing but knowing how to get the results is another but the best gift to have is the one that can fix problems and that will only ever come from proper experience ;) Dont run before you can walk as you'll be letting not just yourself down but a bird of prey too and they deserve so much more than that. Good luck getting a mentor and with your learning :)

Well the Harris is a fantastic bird and totally done for due to its prolific and ease of breeding the prices are almost disposable now. I have noticed a massive surge in goshawks for sale and being bred do you think these are going to go the same way?

Bull I have done the lantra it was worth doing as it gives you a good understanding of many aspects of falconry I would do it sooner rather than later you will get experience of picking up and putting down birds I had to demonstrate lure work and complete a booklet that looked at diseases, bird care, housing etc. I would say definately get telemetry for your bird as its a god send and will stop you losing it. With so many harris being sold on I would be more inclined to buy a second hand bird that is over 3 years of age. Chances of it being a screamer are lowered if you insist on seeing the bird flown as they cant have it sitting fat as butter. Also you are merely retraining and there are some good birds that get wasted.

If we could get a culture of people buying older birds then the insentive to breed would be dramatically reduced as there would be a reduced demand. Instead you get the attitude that you buy an older second hand hawk and it will have problems. Some do but alot dont people merely start with a harris and then want to move onto another bird. I have had two older harris hawks and they are brilliant.

quite agree i remember when male harris hawks were £800 and females £1000 much the same with gos hawks. now there for nothing, this does nothing for the birds welfare as they become an affordable whimsy to be played with and then left or disposed of. im not saying the bloke asking for advice will be one of these people but the reality is, its more likely than not. falconry needs an apprentaship scheme simular to the one thats been in the states for years and breeders should be licensed to control the amount bred, how many times have you seen young harris`s advertised and there still struggling to sell the young from the clutch before that one. with all the advancements that have been made in falconry over the years housing, feeding, a.i ect you would have thought the overall welfare of the birds would have inproved however i believe the opposite has happened.

I said to a pal three or four years ago Goshawks are on a sticky wicket with the amount now being bred by insemination, the sad thing is its all come about sooner than first thought.

at least 99% of the imprinted birds end up in breeding programs which consiquently Has/Will flood the market like the HH's have previously...

Its a shame as the Goshawk once upon a time was the opitime of falconry. reaching the stage of taking up and flying a highly prized P/R Gos proved a certain standard you have acheived though out your Falconry career, these days its sad to say every tom dick and harry has one due to the amount now available and rock bottom prices? there's more and more being bred exceeding demand ...

How long before the Peregrine reaches this stage? the sad thing about these is not so many people want them to fly with more wanting them to imprint for future breeding stock, one of the reason very seldom a Imprint will leave these premises.
