cookes in dalston was one of the best eel shops sadly now gone i could walk there in 10 minutes i still live right in the middle wouldnot live any where else suppose you just get used to it but wife is born and bred here and all my kids live within 5 minutes and only 30 minutes drive to some good hunting

Now that is a shithole !!.....The only thing i respect about North London is they have kept a lot of the old traditional boys clubs St Matthias, the old Crown and Manor,Islington bc etc etc.....its a funny old area simply because you have ridiculous wealth and total poverty right on top of each other.....most of West London is poncey,South and East are toilets....but North is a bit of both......

I admire anyone who can stay loyal to their area so good on you........i,ll always be loyal to my people but i had to give up on the area....some things are just beyond our control !

crown and manor was my old club also loin club at pitfield st some good days spent their

Probably one of the Manzes shops think theres still one in Chapel St market Islington.....probably like most cities theres still some very traditional shops/businesses that are a good representation of the area.....Manzes is a family going back to the 1800,s in the pie and mash game still have exactly the same recipe they had 100 years ago !!.....same as the Sackers in the fish game and plenty of others who have handed businesses down through families thats something i still love about the East End, despite being virtually taken over by foreigners there is still a very staunch and loyal tradition within born and bred east end people to look out for each other and use each other in business whenever possible......i live half hour away from West Ham now but i still use the old traditional places in my every day life whether it be food, mates or whatever....i still take my dry cleaning to the same shop thats been there since i was a kid.......even silly things like greengrocers,i still use the same stall down Walthamstow High Steet that is owned by a gr grandson of the original owner.........

Tourists will always head for the main attractions but unless you get into the real nooks and crannies of an area you will never see the best of it in my opinion.......i suppose if i went to Manchester id want an Eccles cake.....if i went to Glasgow id want haggis :bad: .......but finding the best will not necessarily be at the biggest shop in the centre of the city its like anything your not going to find the best frogs legs at the Eiffel Tower are you :D

This pie And mash you refer to!

I'm guessing it's not a scotch pie or mince pie .

You would think it would be a pretty straightforward recipe....................but believe me,plenty of gang warfare and turf rivalries have erupted over a bit of beef and pastry :D
