djs7547 104
fair play if its your job (pest control) , but im not into hunting out of season for sport. i like to wait till the quarry can at least learn to use the legs and gather some speed, if not then its just a slaughter i agree, iv said this before and will say it again, "thats the reason theres a hunting season and a fishing season, when one stops, another begins" that was the way my father brought me up,when i was a kid he would really get angry at me if i deliberately went out and killed anything that was classed as game from april-august. although, he would say that rule would only be bent should someone fone (which happened on various occasions, as my dad worked a lot of farms) and asks to get rid of some rabbits or whatever that were causing problems on there land or if you have a pup, which is getting its first few tasters in. 30 years later im still living by that rule and teach my son who is now 10 the same Edited April 27, 2012 by djs7547

blackmaggie 3,376
i dont think anyone likes doing it but with good permission so hard to come by and keep and the amount of lads willing to do whatever to get permission including the rifle men its a job thats needs to be done otherwise it will be one less farm you have and word of mouth soon spreads amongst farmers that such a body wouldnt come out so i got such a body to sort it
lurcher330 2,301
I don't think anyone would get pleasure out of killing cubs, but a vixen with cubs are the biggest problem for farmers and keepers ,with a few mouths to feed they will take easier prey such as lambs, chickens and poults ,and if a vixen is causing problems she has to be dealt with and i would much rather dig her with her cubs rather than lamping her and leaving cubs to starve to death, as i said on a similar thread to this during the season i check my permission on regular nights lamping or days digging to keep the numbers down but on the off season i will only go out to do pest control if called out. and killing foxes is pest control ,the sport part is the chase or the digging, which i find the deeper the better
hedz31 1,308
I think there is a fine line between foxes as a pest and as a sporting animal and a fox slip's on both side's very easily,it is an unfortunate evil that is carried out,i fail to see why folk would relish it or keep photo's of it etc but on the same side i fail to see why folk's are so offended by it as it is and always will be a part of terrier work and for those that think it's slaughter ive seen cub's make good dog's look stupid,i think it's a stupid topic to keep bringing up and better of left alone
barryh11 14
I was brought not to hunt between april to august just like someone had stated on this issue I have solid permission from farmers in my area and I know if the farmers had a problem I would get a call I walked the land along with my father who has taught me alot in the hunting but as I think killing for fun is wrong he ran young lad's of his land but I agree with things that you all have said but I like my quarry that hunt to be of adult size thats why we all have fishing rods for when the season ends for we all like a hunt, and I dont protect a species that does so much damage and causes farmers to come breaking point let it men who farm from pigs to lambs up to chickens but until that call comes I wouldnt go seeking out cubs,,im an avid hunting man with my young lads keen to learn from me as I did from my father and is looking to do things the wright way until then I will go fishing like most of us do waiting for august to arrive.....

It's alway's the wrong type of interest though your a lurcher man bill through and through not a terrier man so why look for argument's on a terrier topic it's part and parcel of the game with terrier work
