Guest vin
great looking pack of dogs there Germhound ... get some more posts up and tell us more about your opinions on the 1st crosses and the 3/4. Would it be wise to maybe do a 1st cross Saluki x Shepard to try and see if that helped with the heat ? Quote Link to post
Germhound 61
Hi Vin , Cheers . I reckon I'm getting a bit to long in the tooth to try a new line, I'm probably going to stick to what I'm used to . But then I don't know of any salukis in NZ never seen one thats for sure. I was told of someone that had show salukis some yrs back but that's it. There are not many 'lurcher men' about over here probably count on 2 hands the people that use running dogs. A few pig dogs have greyhound in them but they're pig dogs and thats all their used for . I tried to get a whippet to put over my greyhound a few yrs back , but the 'whippet people' I'd found thought that was a bad thing to do and I was trurned down on several occasions , again most whippets are the show type. My plan is to put Zappa to his daughter Becca sometime in a year or two , although he was castrated last yr , I had his semen extracted and put on ice. My preference would be to breed a 1/2 x again, but I have what I want in Zappa and again I would be producing a new line and that means getting another greyhound bitch in and finding a stud dog ,or using my white gsd and finding a greyhound stud dog , which I think would be difficult. I know Zappa's lines work suit me . What ever I breed I'm probably going to have to reduce the pups down a lot , idealy a litter of 2 would be great. Selling or even giving away GSD x greyhounds is hard work in NZ. For me preference between the 3/4 and the 1/2 cross , would be the 1/2 cross , hardy , good feet, stamina , endurance, versatile , brains ,use their nose more, strong, bidable, fast enough for most game (although I have seen Zappa left standing by wallaby's, think a hare can shift you should see a wallaby go with a dog after it , and they just go and go. Seen one run Zappa to almost a standstill. He was just a spec at the bottom of the valley , and could hardly walk by the time he came back to me,his brains let him down there , but he learn't from it) and I like them, the 1/2 cross that is. The 3/4 crosses are quicker off the mark , get onto game quicker , but I think they lack in versatility, stamina to be out all day and night , suffer bumps more , their coats are lighter so don't suffer the heat so much , but do the cold and damp. they don't have the patients to learn, get bored quicker. But that's just my thought's comparing what I have. I've tried to teach them to fetch shot rabbits but I failed. Becca the 3/4 bitch follows her father Zappa more , she gets into cover and hunts up , Dweezil is reluctant to , although his size may have something to do with that, but then he's worked out if he waits on the outskirts of the scrub he's got more chance of getting onto whatever breaks. If I was working nice grassland all the time I would probably saying the 3/4 x is best , but I work varied land and always have, from rocky ground, woodlands , gravel, nice grass, hard dry ground, mixed scrub and it can be hard on the dogs feet and legs and teeth. I used to take the 1/2 crosses beating when I was back in Wales, not sure if the 3/4 would be up for that. So it's horses for courses really , I think you have to work out what x would suit you best for what your going to do with them, and what x you would like best. some nice ground we work , but it soon goes to this , A lot of that scrub is like blackthorn bushes only with longer spikes, its called madagara. 4 Quote Link to post

Germhound 61
Jigsaw , there's plenty of oppurtunity, lots of conservation ground that you can hunt just get a permit , deer, goats, chamois, thar , wallaby, hares rabbits , possum, hedgehogs , ferrets , stoats ,cats rats mice all there for the taking , just depends on how far your willing to travel , where you live and the usual things in life that get you places. Just have to get off your ass and get out there . this site is for places for all to hunt , have a gander, just have to check on the poison drops. http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/hunting/where-to-hunt/ Then there's all the private land and farmers to approach, most hunting apart from pigs, is probably gun work . Once you have a gun licience you can buy almost any gun you want. Breeze that Mr Barton , ooh not sure about him !!!!! Fun days the shows, mostly . I can still remember going to my first show with Rooney and Musket and wondering why people did'nt think that my dogs were as great as I did . Took me a while to get educated and to be pointed in the right direction Still does I think ! Cheers Bunnys I'll send you an email Mr Bird , Buck is looking good there, is he recovering well from the grass episode ? Do you think it had been sprayed with something ? I'm still coming around to life in the real world, arrived back in NZ in mid April , away for 14 month but it was worth it. Looking for rabbit sign amongst penguins and seals was a bit different . My dogs are getting fitter slowly. Still trying to catch up on all my chores that need sorting. Edited August 3, 2014 by Germhound Quote Link to post

trigger2 3,146
Any ever tried a 3/4 gsd i/4 greyhound ? ive never even seen one let alone tried one. you would probably be able to go out and lamp a few rabbits with one. imo you would want one of the taller dogs out of the litter. have you ever seen one or worked one? Bossie 90
Any ever tried a 3/4 gsd i/4 greyhound ? If going for a reverse breeding with these dogs I think you'd be better of with a 3/4 dutch shepherd or malinois 1/4 greyhound compared to 3/4 german shepherd 1/4 greyhound. Quote Link to post
bunnys 1,228
interesting point the reverse type, ben done lots a times with collies etc even collie on ta lurcher,it did xs my mind of using a malli or east german sheperd ova jaz some in the future all being well .jaz vewry light for the xs and some would think shelly has i do she his a fourth generation xs plenty grey in her genes i would think the welps be fine for the lone ranger, tonto not needed .atb bunnys.
