You could if germhound wanted have straws shipped to NZ to be stored there to cover his bitches. he deff got alot ot offer max, in any llurcher line, he deff ticked all the boxes for me . ,so you never know mate ,,looking forward to seeing you next year with jon, Quote Link to post

Will give this place a better looking at with the ferrets in the winter when there at not so many young rabbits about. Until then I'll just shoot them . The guys I was with may have some pics I can post . A lot of young penguins get killed by feral/wild ferrets ... Germhound - I don't know why, but I thought ferreting was illegal in NZ because of all the problems with ferals & escapees. Are there any restrictions? A lot of young penguins get killed by feral/wild ferrets ... yeh lets have a look at your pics then, did you see any of Buck he is 3 year old now,28in 86lb and very strong with hell of a bite on him, gsds in pure form got good bite and so do greys, prob why Buck as as well, . whats your temp like on your dogs thats 1x and 1/4 breds, Buck very soft temp quite wimpy really,;dont bark to daft as guard lol but as said in the field he full on, you wouldnt think he was the same dog.? Yes seen some pics of Buck he's a fine looking dog , I'd be happy with him . Have to wait for the other pics to be sent. Zappa is good as gold with most people , he will bark like hell when people are about , but if they come through the gate he's soft,he just barked at them until I spoke and then he would be up for fusses with them. Although there has been a few he just would not except. If another dog is about, male or female he will give it hell if it comes into his territory, I always had to introduce strange dogs to him , then he was fine as long as long they accepted he was boss on his patch. We had a wandering farm collie came thru the gate when I had a liter of pups here , he just rushed it picked it up and shook it like a rag doll , he was a strong bugger . The 1/4 shepherds are the same but to a lesser degree , more laid back than Zappa but will bark if anybody is about , and more tolerant to other dogs .. Quote Link to post

Ferreting is not illegal , but you have to have a permit to keep ferrets , you are allowed 3 ferrets as long as you have a reason to keep them and they must be neutered. That's what I have found out so far, but there is a lot of conflicting advice. I'll find out properly in the next week or 2. We cannot breed them , you have to trap one from the wild. I tried about 6 or 8 before I had one I could handle. My fingers were in tatters for a good while. I even had one that must of just been off the mother when I trapped it , I thought I was onto a winner there, but no even at that young age he bit the hell out of me , no matter how much I handled it. I work as a trapper/ranger and we trapped around 300 ferrets last year on the reserve I work at , we have about a 60 km of trap lines. 3 Quote Link to post

Max I have straws of Zappa stored at the moment, managed to get enough out of him for just insemination's. I had him castrated whilst I was working away for 15 months thought it may help with my partner looking after him. My thoughts at the moment are to put Zappa to his daughter , Becca, the bitch in the pictures. The biggest problem I have here in NZ is that no one wants lurchers especially GSD x 's , so which ever way I go any litter I breed will have to be culled , which is something I don't look forward to . The last litter of 3/4 x's were hell to home , I only wanted a bitch, but ended up keeping 2. But that worked out well, Dweezil the dog I kept has caught more rabbits than any of the others in my team he's 31 inches to the shoulder and about 84lbs , he works the edges waiting when we're in cover and just nails then as they break , usually in the right place at the right time , he is just mad and chucks himself at bunnies. Although his madness is not doing him any favors he has lost 5 or 6 teeth including snapping a top canine - I heard that one go , he struck hard at a bunny and carried on through hitting a rock. and he has a recurring shoulder injury lately. They don't bounce well and are not as tough as the 1/2 cross. 1 Quote Link to post

We have a few spots with turkey's about usually the dogs are not allowed to bother them . This day was different I thought I'd give it a go . Becca has had a few geese , a black swan so I thought I'd put turkey on the list. As I said not the best bit of action, probably none to sporting either but you don't know till you try and well aware that vid is bound to bring criticism but it's a different world down here, The turkey's usually get bombed up and culled by someone with a shotty or used for target practice with a rifle and left to rot. Taste pretty good so the dogs and I had a meal out of it , no waste. happy days ! 6 Quote Link to post

Red Center 165 Posted October 31, 2015 Report Share Posted October 31, 2015 I was shocked at the amount of turkeys I saw running around the hillsides on the south island when I was last over, glad to hear they are doing something with em no one could give me a straight answer when I asked about it. Also, for those who have never been, NZ is really hunter friendly. Even going across the ditch from Oz I was blown away with how open and pleasant about it everyone was. I was even ready a hunting mag on a plane from Dunedin to Christchurch and one of the air hostesses started asking me what I hunted, where, what sort of guns I had etc it was a great feeling 1 Quote Link to post

Yeah I saw plenty driving from Picton to Dunedin. I got the same vibe from everyone, they just sort of shrugged it off and said no one bothers with em.
