I wanted to put a pure over mine.when I had her.still miss her , I would worry if I got another shepherd lurcher whether I would compare it to her too much and ruin it.?

I got her off here as a pup ,she was a first cross ,white longhaired shepherd bitch to a greyhound,

I know of Heart of Wales keep in touch with him through facebook now and then , he was still working his shepherd x .

I wondered how I would fair in comparing Zappa to my old dogs Musket and Rooney , but although in my head I compare,it's more of just for knowledge if thats a way of putting it. I still took zappa for the dog he is and got on with it , no regrets, infact he was probably better off as I half new what to expect with the cross.

 

I have a young white shepherd that caught her 1st rabbit when she was about 14 month old , in the day . Fluke maybe, but she is a fast dog for her size. I've not used her for rabbitting since then ( I was away for 14 months) . II've had other plans for her which means breaking her to rabbit ( longish story/dream I have ) which although I hav'nt worked her on them she has picked up the excitement of rabbit scent from walking the other dogs and her together.

She has just finished her season and the thought came to me , I wondered for a good while how thing would turn out if I put Zappa to her .

I think the reverse may make a fine dog for hunting up and marking, pushing cover, lamping maybe , I've used 3 full shepherds over the yrs for hunting up and they all do well , just wondering.

I suppose you would have to decide what you would want such a cross for , if it was for hares then it would not be the best choice . working them in a pack they would be capable of grabbing rabbits ???? .

yeh I know who you mean, he liked this x a lot , spoke to him before , he thought my young dog should be spot on and tackle anything , they are lurchers he really likes

why not put a greyhound to her,and start another 1x line.? if you like the bitch gsd and think she got good quality's for a hunting dog healthy+agile+fast good coat+feet, brain the grey will had the speed . I sent you another email .?

he did talk about that , not sure if he did though ? even if he dropped to whippet , he still get solid type dog though from the x, as gsd;s are quite heavy set dogs.maybe a bel mal might be more lighter type dog to use , I think the dsd smaller than a gsd but more heavier set than a bel mal.and calmer temp like the gsd ,the bel mal more of a hyper temp , don't know if I could live with a dog like that ,my young dog Buck very laid back only switchs on in the field lol, but its a good job with his size+power .

Did a lot of rabbit on the lamp with a belgian cross. She was Groenedal though not a malinois. Still in the kennel now, retired though at 13 years old. Best dog ive had so far to be honest. Not the fastest but really didn't need to be as was a very clever and committed dog.

Her father was a well known dog on fox pre ban down here in Cornwall. Very sad to retire her and wish I had bred from her when she was younger. I would probably have used a whippet dog over her as well.

yeh like to have a look my 1x gsd x grey Buck picks rabbits up easy, he is fast+agile for a big dog(28in 87lb), speed never been a prob for him he can get on to most stuff quick enough . I would imagine he a lot bigger than your dog , so carnt see how yours not that fast , if you see what I mean.? ive seen coursing greyhounds as big or bigger than Buck, and they catch well enough .
