jasper65 6
Always fancied a aviary with British finches Cadders! there's a bloke down this way who has them but from what I can see it has a solid back with aviary panels across the front, its not much wider than 4ft but his must be 12ft long at least and goes into a enclosed section, the last time I saw his set up he had lots of Leylandi and whatever in it, I'll see if I can get some pic's next time I go round...... derbylad 1
my aviary is 2 seperate aviarys small walk way in the middle so you can open the doors without them escaping i use to keep finches and canaries in one side other side budgies and kakarikis etc now i only have a hand full of canaries a couple of java sparrows and one java dove for some reason i lost within a couple of weeks about 40 finches my whole stock i now keep my ferrets in the left hand aviary ive never succesfully raised any canaries in my aviary they lay the eggs but once they hatch they throw them out as for finches started with about 9 ended with loads in a very short time they breed all year round as long as its not too cold lovely in summer listening to the canaries sing a must for any garden thanks leighton

skycat 6,173
I can't stop my canaries breeding, and last year, by mistake I might add! I managed to keep back one cock bird and 6 hens and they all hatched and reared 2 if not 3 clutches, all in the same big aviary! The pic of the nest is of some small bronzes and the yellow one is a bigger chick off another clutch getting a bit of rest: actually it had cottoned on to the fact that if it sat in this nest the mother of the bronzes would feed it as well: cunning little devil! skycat 6,173
To be honest I'm no expert on birds at all! A friend originally gave me some canaries and all he told me was to provide them with more than enough good nest sites. I've had up to 30 birds in an aviary 8x12 feet, open on two sides, clear corrugated on the roof. I make up the nest sites by getting a bit of inch square weldmesh about a foot square, then bend two sides up to form a rectangular box like shape with open ends. I then weave conifer through the mesh lengthways to make a secure safe darkish place, and hook it on to the ceiling of the aviary. Put loads of dry grass on the floor, and loads of dog hair in a little rack (like a closed hay rack for horse, but tiny) which I hook on to the side of the aviary. There's also a lot of conifer and willow branches around the aviary for cover. Say I've now got 2 hens and one cock bird: I put up 4 nest sites so they don't have to squabble over the best place. I also feed them green food all year round: broccoli and apple in the winter and chick weed (tons of the stuff) all the time when its growing. Fresh rape seed pods straight off the plant too. Canary seed mix, with added wild bird mix for insectivorous birds , plus a husked sunflower seed mix too: my canaries love aphids when they are feeding their young and they'll feed the dried meal worms etc if you provide them! Also put a good quality egg food (Ce-De is the best I've found) from early Spring onwards, and plenty of grit and oystershell too. But if your's have been chucking the nestlings out it sounds as though there is too much competition for nest sites, though I suppose it is possible that you could have a rogue bird that's just an a**hole! I don't know, I've never come across it: I've had my birds about 10 years now though I've got nowhere near as many as I did have: 4 avaries and they were beginning to take over the garden! Down to just one avairy now: I haven't clue what my birds are, just a real old mixture of Fifes and something else I think LOL I just like them for the song and the colours. I'll put some pics of my nestsites up when I get a minute.
