Thanks mate. I'm not entirely sold on the looks - I'm a bit of a traditionalist with my rifles. Good to read your opinion :)

I could do with finding someone near north bucks has uses a .243 for a chat and even perchance a shot or two somewhere.....I feel a cheeky new thread coming on!

Hi guys.

I got a Steyr prohunter and love it, i'm no expert but comfortably shoot deer out to about 250 with a 200 zero. Very accurate with factory federal shoks, i know a guy who is shooting his with home loads to 500-600 yards very accurately.

I'm selling mines, gun+2 mags, t8 mod and sling as i'm going for a .270 variation to cover all things shootable up here and i also fancy getting into the boars down south.

550 for cash no negotiations. I groups sub 2" at 200 yards with factory stuff and know this could be improved on by a good shot.

I will jump in here with my bit. However please be assured I am no expert, I have had the good fortune to be able to stoot a number of rifles as my mate is an RFD.

Most modern rifles are accurate out of the box. (well the ones i have shot were) I have shot mainly tika T3s and 595s I think it is called? X-bolts, CZ and a remmington or two. To mind they were much of a muchness.

X-bolt, lovely rifle. I didn't like the trigger. It was too heavy for me at 3 lbs and I couldn't get it down below that. So if you like the look and feel make sure you are ok with the trigger. I replaced it with a LH Tika in 243. trigger is adjustable to my liking. Both rifles nicely accurate out of the box. I now have 2 tikas. I really like them. Sako is a tika but made to a higher standard. (looks and feels better? I suppose you could consider Toyota and Lexus)

Never shot a Blaser and not sure if I would justify the money, (but do like the straight pull) people who have them seem to think they are the bees knees. If you have the money then fine. If like me you are a tight wad then the cheaper option will be plenty accurate.

We can all give advice but it is down to what people want or intend to use it for. If you are into bling then spend the money on the shiny shiny. If you are going to be a target shooter then get a heave barrel. I carry my rifle over my shoulder for an hour or so so weight is important to me, hence I want a light barrel and when I take a shot I am hopeful that it will be only one that day and the deer or fox has gone straight down. Unless another target presents itself of course.

In short, find a rifle that you like, see if your local shop is doing it at a price you are willing to pay, check the trigger is ok for you and then go and buy a decent scope. THAT IS VERY IMPORTANT. I have a Meopta Artemis on my deer rifle and leupolds on the rest. I use NV a lot so side parallax is important to me for the other stuff. If you intend to lamp then side parallax isn't so important. For the amount of use I couldn't justify a swaro, but that is me.

But just my thoughts. Good luck with the search

Sorry to jump on your thread The Duncan.....

No worries JJ :)

You just want to part with the money for a new rifle once, like me.

That's for sure buddy... its a fair enough price to pay, but only once as you say.. and i want it to be the right one.

thanks again Sir.

Thank you very much Gloop for the advise and info.

I have only handled the rifle at FA ANDERSON and as you say the trigger's on the Browning have been made better with a lighter pull now so in the shop it felt good for me,

and the quality and stock material and fit all seems very nice, i also like as you say the fluted barrel.

to be honest I think with what I just said "I think I like this one" looks like the Browning is for me.

would really like to find someone local to me to have a go at one ideally, but as you say there all pretty much the same from out of the box.

My only concern really is using my Pulsar N550 nv on it.....!

any one use one on there .243 any concerns or issues...

Thank you again for jumping on this thread and sound advice.

As far as I am aware you should be ok with the pulsar on the 243. They don't kick that much. But if you want to be really sure try shooting something like a 53 grain vmax instead of the normal 95/100 grain. lot lighter and less kick. would also be very fast and flat. 53 grain might be a bit light so you might need to go up in size. depends on the twist. I think the x bold is 1 in 12?

Cheers Gloop - thanks for the input :)

I have also the howa very accurate . A reliable model for a very good price.

Japanese aren't they? Should be very well made - worth a look too I reckon. Be interesting to see how they compare to the german contingents.

Thinking possibly of a Steyr Mannlicher or Blaser. Anyone had any experience of them?

I do like a german rifle!

The difference between those two will be around a grand then!

As a all in one utility 'field' rifle i'd look at something with a sporter barrel and composite stock. Most out the box rifles will outshoot their user so fondle away and find something that purrs to you - I use a Sauer 202, got a mate with a Tika T3, another with both a remi 700 and Sako - they don't miss much. The glass is important and DON'T skimp on the mounts either... a very underestimated bit of kit.
