Guest Ditch_Shitter
Ok, yes; I know we have a stuck thread for " Moths, Insects, Bugs and christ knows what else ". Only I'm personally a bit of a bugger for photographicly 'Catching' moths. Have been for over a year now and I love it. I just thought I'd open this new thread to A. Show you lot what I get and B. In the hope that someone else out there may share my quiet passion or, who knows, even be inspired to look more closely at what's beating it's little head against ye window of a night. Read the above again and ye'll see that I'm no expert. Far from it! Good grief! I'm only a casual 'Moth Man' and, since my home made trap got damaged, I now have to just rely on what lands on my window or finds it way in here ~ before the damn Dogs eat them. It'd be great if ye could fetch ye own images here for us all to admire. Save them getting lost anidst all the beetles and dragon flys on the other, more generalised thread. Either way, I'm about to spend some quality time up loading my own little gallery here to kick us off. Please note; Every shot I'll be presenting here has been cropped and then compressed. They'll take minimal bandwidth and won't blow the page sideways either. I use microsoft's Office Picture Manager for this. If ye have no such facility yeself and want to show us something, why not drop me a PM and I'll sort it out for ye? Incidentally; I'm probably 99% certain of the correct identification of 95% of my moths, at least. But we all make cock ups. If ye know better than me then I'd be delighted, not embarressed, if ye could give me a shout Anyway, without further ado and in no particular order, here's some moths. Quite a lot of them, in fact. But only a .000 percentage of what's out there. What might You have to add? August Thorn ~ Ennomos quercinaria Beautiful Carpet ~ Mesoleuca albicillata Common Emerald ~ Hermithia aestivaria Dotted Border ~ Agriopis marginaria Drinker ~ Euthrix potatoria Engrailed ~ Ectropis bistortata (1st Gen Male) Feathered Thorn ~ Colotois pennaria Frosted Orange ~ Gortyna flavago Gold Spot ~ Plusia festucae Green Brindled Crescent ~ Allophyes oxyacanthae Herald ~ Scoliopteryx libatrix 2 November ~ Epirrita dilutata

RabbitNMY 0
Hello. I am pleased you stuck this post up as I caught a real beastie of a moth. I think its a hawk moth of some sort. I got a few pics and yes it was as big as it looks MASSIVE. Regards Steve
Guest Ditch_Shitter
Poplar Hawk Moth! ~ Laothoe populi And isn't it a stinker?! Ye lucky sod! Nice to see ye " Caught it " in a polystirene cup and, obviously, let it go again mate In this (Digital) day and age I honestly can't understand the mentallity of people who yet insist on sticking pins in things, just to show they 'got one'. Anyway; I take it ye caught that bugger, for a look and a shot, just because it was 'a bit noticable' (30 - 46mm ) ? Does that not lead ye to wonder about what else might be out there - or flying round ye lights?

And yea I caught it in a soup carton because it came in the house just to let it go outside. But I couldnt resist the pictures. If I had even thought of killing it our lass would of cut my b*lls off, she has a soft spot for insects and stuff. She even catches spiders to let them go outdoors. I am no Professional Photographer by a long shot but I do love macro shots of insects for my collection. I have some picture files full of beasties and creepy crawleys. I live adjoining a large wood so I do get my fair share of insects visiting my house. At the moment we have a decent supply of Cockchafer (May-Bugs) I never took them pics I have just posted them for quickness until I find mine on HDD. Maybe I should start another post to put these pics in. ? But for now here is a couple that I took with a little crappy didgy cam that showed decent detail. I know I have moved off moths and may bugs...but here goes. All Images reduced in size and kb/s so not to scran bandwidth. Steve
skycat 6,173
Crappy little digital camera!? Look pretty damn good to me.
RabbitNMY 0
I just thought I would pop these on as well. Just me playing in the garden with a pocket camera. I will buy a good camera one day.... But for now ! Steve
zek 0
Love those photos - I used to be into moths, and still have the Robinson trap - I intend to get started again! I used to keep a sample of each species caught - yes, I'm a 'pin/setting board' man. It's useful for genitalial examinations - some can only be separated by this method. Mind you, with digital photography as you say, I might change my approach slightly, if I get started again. I've a bad memory for names tho'. On a slightly separate subject, I was down at Ballysadare a couple of weeks ago, and had a quick visit to the Caves of Kesh or Keshcoran as it's sometimes called. That's near Leitrim, isn't it? There was a male Kestrel hanging around the limestone cliff, above the caves - might be nesting? Maybe a photo opportunity? Zek.
bill88 6
Due to global warming no doubt,i noticed a lot of these last summer( hummingbird hawk moth).I'd only ever seen them abroad untill then. Not great quality, but how do you tell a moth to "sit still!"
RabbitNMY 0
Nice 1 bill88 I have honestly never seen one of those in the real. Steve
Ossie 11
shitty pic, cos my camera is crap, but i just found this little beauty on my bedroom wall...
Guest Ditch_Shitter
Ossie; I'd Really like to have got a better look at that " Little " moth. (Were ye speaking figuratively? Or is it 'small'?) Only that looks for all the world, to me, like a Least Carpet ~ Idaea rusticata atrosignaria. If it is, it's about as early as one might reasonably expect one. More to the point, Norfolk? Interesting and predicted expansion of their range. So it's not ground breaking, but it'd be nice to confirm. Perhaps, if it's still in view, ye could look it up on ukmoths.com See how it compares? I'd really like Zek to come in on this one. Anyone who owns a Richardson needs listening to!

I'll dig out Skinner at the weekend and see what he says about it. Zek.
Guest Ditch_Shitter
Righto, mate I'm working from Waring, Townsend and Lewington here. Says they're found up from Essex, as I remember? And that their range is expanding. Looks possible that this one's reached Norfolk then? Flight season's stated as " Late May ". So it's quite a possible and wouldn't be earth shattering. I'll await ye further opinion
zek 0
How about a female Silver-ground Carpet? Tho' I'll have to confess, it does look like Least Carpet. I suppose size would differentiate. Zek.
