waleslurcher and terrier show

Johnnyboy and I will be going.

an a pleasure to meet you both

i must have seen you all there! Ideation, were you the fella that got the abuse from the blondes other half?

Ha ha mate. . . . yes that was me . . . getting myself in trouble, turns out not everyone has a sense of humour. Almost got punched and got beaten in the whippet class by a load of show ponies, so not the best day for me  But i enjoyed it, met a few good folk, and watched the dogs. Johnnyboys kids walked away with ten rosettes and a trophy, so they were buzzing like a fridge. Pretty much no terriers, but i think that was a lot to do with the amount of nice folk with pet dogs and it being judged by someone who was not known as a terrier man/woman by many. One more tip - cover both sides of the speed hurdle thing as all the smart dogs just went under the barrier and sprinted round the hurdles. All in all a fun day and good weather which was a bonus.

i was stood in the ring behind the bloke that told you to shut it  with the red bitch.

Sorry mate, didn't spot you, i was too busy being surprised by the lad threatening to punch me, it was one of those 'what the f**k' moments. He wasn't so keen to throw punches later when my body guard asked him what his fecking game was

the show raised just under £1000 for the charity this will buy quite a bit of hay and other food badly needed in their cause. a big, big thank you to all that attended and to all those that sponsored

well,i can honestly say that a working lurcher won the under 23" racing and the speed racing! So its not all bad.

ideation i would love to know how you could tell which ones worked and which didnt just by looking at them.and that goes for any running dog not just whippets.dont know about anyone else but when i ju

well as i was in the whippet class and my dogs aint no show ponies i can assure u the judge did a very good job if you ask me its a lot harder to be in the ring picking than outside mouthing about it of that im sure lol

Please don't threaten to punch me  I've had enough of that. I wasn't mouthing off about who won what when the lad wanted to punch me either, it was a totally unrelated issue over shooting foxes :whistling:

Don't get offended, it wasn't meant to be personal, but there was quite a small percentage of proper working dogs at that show, and the whippet class was the biggest of the day as usual, and if they were all workers, i'd love to know what the definition of 'worker' is? There were a couple in there that looked like they had done a bit, but a lot of them didn't look like they knew what a rabbit / rat / fox / hare was :tongue2:

It's be interesting to know what criteria different folk at different shows judged dogs on, especially whippets, who all have simiar stamps. . . . the way they stand? They way they walk?

P.S TT - for someone who's dogs are not 'show ponies' you do go to an awful lot of shows :tongue2: (chilll out, it's a joke)

ideation i would love to know how you could tell which ones worked and which didnt just by looking at them.and that goes for any running dog not just whippets.dont know about anyone else but when i judge i dont have any pre conceived ideas about any dogs i just examine on the day and pick which i like on the day based on a number of differant things ,conformation ,feet ,mouth ,movement, presence, condition, and what might look very similar from outside the ring can look and feel completly differant from inside the ring when your running your hands and eyes over them and concentrating on what your examining.believe me when i say its the easiest job in the world being a judge when your outside the ring looking in in fact theres usually loads of people doing just that judging what they would pick ,i do it myself if ime lookin from outside the ring but not so easy when your in the middle trying to do your best to keep concentration and give your honest opinion on every dog you handle and judge .and whether a dog works or not never enters my mind when judging them because YOU OR ANYONE ELSE WILL EVER KNOW ORTELL JUST BY LOOKING unless you know the dog itself and have seen it work and even then it should not make a blind bit of differance to a good judge because theey are judging whats in front of them on the day .

That is a very fair post mate, and i wasn't knocking the judging of the show, at the end of the day it will always come down to what the man in the ring likes the look of on the day, it's a show, not a working test. I wasn't crabbing about who was picked in anyway, it's just a show.

However r.e. working vs non working - i think you can look at a dog, especially a breed like a whippet and see it, those that are worked hard, have a more muscled and tougher all round build, that you only really get from hours and hours of running each and every week. I've also never seen a working whippet that got through it's days without a nic, cut or scar. It also probably helps when you live locally and know of a lot of the folk and dogs, and know what they do or dont do. I'd also imagine it'd be quite hard for one person to work something like seven whippets.

I fully accept you will never please everyone, and i take my hat off to those (such as yourself) who are willing to stand up and do it

I've never been one for shows and just started going to a few in the last couple of summers, it just seems to me that they are no longer really 'working terrier and lurcher' shows / racing, and more for folk who want to own working breeds for showing and racing. Especially the whippet classes. Although i suppose everyones definition of working differs, and for some a 'worker' is a dog who chases the odd bunny when out for a walk.

But it's just a bit of fun, and a good chance to meet folk from places like this, and talk dogs  So keep up the good work and ignore the miserable gits like me

as i have said numerous times there is a massive differance between a a lurcher thats worked and a working lurcher but i repeat you me or anyone else will ever tell whether any kind of running dog works just by lookin or examining it. now ille tell you a little secret in all the years i have been judging not one owner has admitted that they do not work their dogs .

Hi mate, just reference to the agility racing we were aware it was a problem with the side fencing but we had limited resources to work with with it being a charity fundraising show we had to make do with what was available, was a great day and good to meet some tidy people with the same interests as myself. P,S i was the short a*se working on the agility racing ha ha well done to all the winners on the day and all for taking part,
