Learning pup to jump...

Recommended Posts

Coming up to the 10 month mark now, and although I've tried to tease it in a few times, Tink just will not do fences. Stone walls however, she manages quiet well. Shes got a right bold head on her shoulders, Hence the name Tink short for tinker ! Like i said coming to stone walls she manages them up to about 5-6ft, But fences..whether it be wire or a bar gate for that matter, she always looks for a way under, and if she cannot find one does the mad dash up and down the fence or hedge to spy a way through.

So.. i moved onto small wire fences, no higher than 3-4ft high and not the sort of wire that would do harm to her as it was all rather loose and dangled a little lower than stated, so of i go jumping the fence in a fluster of excitement to find the bitch looking at me like i was senseless. Another try maybe ? ... This time i kept the fence in between my legs and made a big fuss for her only to jump the height of the fence straight up instead of over.

I feel as though shes just taking the p**s to be perfectly honest, as i know she can jump from the stone walls. Im not sure if she finds the wire off-putting and find it all a little puzzling.....So once again...Any help thanks in advance and atb !

If shes in a run put wire across the door and make her jump over it for her food.

Or just get over the fence and walk away as she can jump she should follow if your out of site worked with one of mine who could jump but didn't

get an old jacket or something and put it over the fence covering it and get the dog to jump it keep doing it for several days and then try take the jacket away and get the dog to jump with out it , dogs jump over walls ect stuff u cant see through when there younger quicker than fences ect it's all about confidence though more confident you can get the dog the better

My dog wouldnt touch anything i knew he could jump but he wouldnt , try placing a coat on the wire that does work , but if you can get a bit of fencing without barbs on it and place the dog on one side , and you on the other let her sniff some chicken in your hand and drop it on the ground on the opposite side of the fence to the dog say 4ft away from the fence , the dog will look for the quickest route to the chicken which is over the top. worth a go i suppose atb mate

heres mine jumping he diddnt start to jump properly till he was 13 month lol he loves it now ;)

up until ten months they should only be jumping something shoulder height. not good on the joints whilst growing. then put your coat over a wire fence and put your foot on it lowering it. offer it a treat on the other side. took me about 1 hour messing at a 2 n half foot wire fence. just take your time and dont get stressed. lots of encouragement. can be really annoying though.

Just get it to somewhere it cannot squeeze through or go round, climb over and wait until it picks up the nerve to jump or scramble over,it will get there eventually, repeat the process 2 or 3 times,on each training trip it will become more confident and accomplished, repetition is the key, short training sessions broken up between retrieving, jumping, return etc.

no need to rush or worry as long as it gets past the obstical safely it doesnt matter how. if you walk a regular route and use the points to cross fences just go to a diy store and get some pipe lagging and place a 3ft length over the wire where you cross. the dogs young and it will come in the end, then you will be on here asking how to stop it jumping
