jasper65 6 Posted April 22, 2012 Report Share Posted April 22, 2012 Just a quick post to ask how everyone is doing breeding wise in different parts of the country? heard a few horror stories due to the weather having a big impact on birds coming into breeding condition, must say I'm having a bit of a mare here too with some birds standing for insemination and receptive to me and going through all courtship yet not laying any eggs, these birds previouse years was dead certs ... OK! I know the birds I'm working with are not cage birds as such but I'm interested if anyone else has had any problems with whatever you are breeding? cheers, Jasper Quote Link to post Share on other sites

francolin 449 Posted April 22, 2012 Report Share Posted April 22, 2012 had one nest 4 eggs laid,then hen never tried to sit em,same hen rebuilt laid,sat,looked today one has hatched this morning,other pair in small flight laid 5 all hatched this week so ok so far. gnipper 6,435 Posted April 22, 2012 Report Share Posted April 22, 2012 Fertility hasn't been a problem so far this year, I've binned 4 eggs but I knew they would be clear as the goldie cock wasn't ready and I've had 3 that didn't hatch out of 12 eggs. Its a big struggle here with birds full in condition on mild days when the sun finally bursts through to being totaly switched off when its pouring down with rain. some birds that normally recycle for me are looking totaly out of sorts and looking to me like they have shut down, I also have a Goshawk here that I have been inseminating since April 6th and she still hasn't layed!! she's still spending time in the nest and also still standing for me yet no sign of a egg coming down .... Think its going to be a strange old year all round with wild birds aswel as captive breeding stock... Quote Link to post Share on other sites

I read also that alot of the wild birds that feed insects to their young will be suffering this year, think its right as there's no where near the amount of insects about as you expect for this time of the year... Millet 4,497 Posted May 18, 2012 Report Share Posted May 18, 2012 I know they are not bop mate but i am having terrible hatch rate's with my quail at the moment i am averaging around 16 hatching from 60 egg's... ..before this weird weather arrived i was averaging aroun 45 from 60 egg's.. Its a strange old year so far mate. makes me laugh how lately we keep getting all this extreme weather breaking records? last year it was supposed to be one of the Hottest April on record and this year its one of the wettest. somthing's well and truely up the creek with our climate which is effecting Insects, plants and other wildlife expecially in the breeding seasons...
