Breeding with 'Strike While the Irons Hot'

Recommended Posts

I'm all set to line my bitch (Grey x Bed x Whip) with Glen (Strike while the Irons hot) - well know stud from Mike Brown, this weekend....

So - Looking for ANY tips for this stage on really - best feed, routine of feeds, anything all you guys n gals can offer me.

I'm a 1st time breeder & even with reading all I have still want to make sure I give the pups the best start they can get (and to keep the mother in best condition).

So far - general I've got is - feed normally for the 1st 5/6 weeks (I use 3/4 Red Mills Tracker & 1/4 Red Mills Racer with tripe/rabbit) then switch to high quality complete puppy food - for last 3 weeks - less but more frequent...is this how most of you do it or should I rethink this a bit ?

Cheers in advance !

Too much protein for my likeing...that's a working dogs diet not a bitch in whelp. Feed mine hard and just a descent cibble nothing to high nothing to low in protei. Maybe abit of get etc fish to give her abit more goodness for the pups.

Cheers - I'll cut out the Mills then & try her on something a little less packed with Protein - should I be looking for something around the 22% mark you think ??

& yeah - intend to speak to Mike for his opinion but variety is the spice of life :)

You have chose the right type of whippet for starters. The last few litters of springers i have bred were reared on a good brand of puppy food and all were good strong pups pluss it makes it easier for the new owners to keep them on the same food [bANNED TEXT] they take them thus not having to change their food if they stuggled to get tripe.
