Totally irresponsible to run a dog into the ground,accidents happen now and then,nobody as control over a long gallop that may tax the best of mutts,but when the dog shows signs of real tiredness,it should go on a lead and the day ended.

It's like a battery: if you run it right down, it takes longer to charge again, and batteries which are continually run down to nothing will fail sooner than those which are recharged often and properly. Running a dog into the ground will inevitably shorten its working life if done on more than the very odd occasion: like when a long run happens at the end of a hard day, or a dog accidently getting on to yet another hare after its already run its guts out.
