my borders ate rat poison

Recommended Posts

Happened to me about 6 months ago, on the weekend. Chucked as much saltwater down her neck to make her yack up as much as possible. Phoned my vet who said she has plenty of vitamin K1 in her body naturally (the antidote for anticoagulant poison). So come along Monday to pick up some K1 tablets. She was on a course of those for 21 days. No problems. & she had a full gut of bromodiolone wheat going by her shit the next few days! I asked the vet if she needed k1 shots also, he said no need.

Hope all goes well.

Good call, anyone who thinks their dog has eaten poison should immediately fire salt water down the dog till they vomit as much as possible, then straight to the vet. Thats what the vet told me when it happened to one of mine. ATB.

my borders ate quite a lot of rat poison ,got him to the vets within 2 hours ,whats his chances ,or will it have a lasting effect ,ie his lungs or anything else thanks carl.

It depends on which active ingredient the bait contained and how much theyve eaten. The antidote is vitamin k1, not vitamin k. Unless theyve eaten shitloads they will be fine.

rodenticide strengh is classified by a term called LD50 which is the lethal dose required to kill 50% of mamals being treated.

As i have been instructed a mamal wieghing 5kg in body wieght would have to eat 2kg of bait. This is for external use baits which have active ingredient of difenacoum or bromadiolone.

Internal use only baits based on an active of brodifacom or flocoumafen are a stronger and would require less.

Rodenticides are multiple feed piosons. For the first 4 days rodents feed on them without outward ill effects and then from 4 to 7 days gradually become unwell from blood loss and ultimately by seven days die. This all in theory but from experience these guide lines vary from treatment to treatment.

I fail to see how a pet that has fed on rodenticide once is going to die when you look at the quantity required to kill a mamal weighing 5 kg in body weight and the need for multiple feed.Again this is all in theory and the age and health of the animal can have a bearing.

One of the commest reasons for people failing to succesfully treat rodent infestations is insufficient rodenticide and not rebaiting often enough prooving the need for multiple feed in suffficient quantity.

People are advocating that you induce vomiting and i can see the reasoning behind this but the safety information we give advices not to do this which is i believe advice on the product safety data sheet.

The main thing is the dog is ok and you have had it treated but i question weather a blood transfusion is necessary.
