Know what you mean Bird and thats why i asked as well,i think it could be lost,watered down to much what ever way you want to put it with a 3/4 bred.Caterpillers dog is a strong dog,not musle bound,but can run on any gorund any where type strength,feet you need some rum old stuff to cut up and mental strength to stay on the ball when the going gets slow but saying that i feel if crossed to a big greyhound to much of it MAY be lost.I know the proof is in the pudding as it were and i may well be wrong hence asking those that know but thats what i think anyway .

Many many, years ago I had a pup out of CW's bitch Speckle, the pup was a pleasure to train, great around the house, for a FC X FC had a fair turn of speed and a prey drive that would be the envy of any dog owner.

 

The first time I took him gate netting for hares, I shone the lamp in the field just to make sure that lepus was where he should have been. Set the two gate nets up one on the gate and one in a gap in the hedge and sent the dog in he went in nose to the ground like a seasoned veteran I stood between the gap in the hedge and the gate expecting the hare to crash into the net at any moment. when out of the darkend field came the unmistakable sound of the death squeals of the hare, he had caught the hare in the dark.

 

How he had done this I will never know, but the dog had a fair turn of speed and it was this speed that ultimately lead to his premeture demise. When he first started lamping around 14 months old he picked up the fact that the beam was there to be used very quickly, unfortunately he never got the idea that if he slowed down once on a rabbit, he would make the kill that much quicker, he always commited to the strike and if the rabbit was missed on that first strike he was left a good 30 odd yard behind the rabbit. As I said he never got to learn how to run rabbits properly as one night the rabbit seen the pipe the dog did not. RIP Slipper.

 

Would I have a similar cross again? In a heartbeat. I spoke to CW about the dog and as with all litters some are good dogs and some are not so good any any litter. Some of the dogs siblings went on to do a lot of good work. Who knows if he had made it to 3 years old perhaps he would have as well.

the only thing i think you would get with the 2nd 1x is more speed, because the original 4 1/8 's acd is as you say watered down with the grey both sides. Not saying the not as good as the 1st x, but you could have lost some of that acd temp that you wanted in the 1st place .!!

just a thought has no one gone on and bred several generations of them irrelivent of fractions , i would think think they would level out a very good type . atb bunnys.

I think of u took It down to 1/4 but using US Staghound would be the best. U won't loose the grit and plenty of them stags are fast as any coldblood grey. And stags I have had had as good of feet as any heeler (what we call them here). They are real popular here and my mom has had two and most of the ranches around here use them or a collie cross some have a bit of blackmouth cur in'um they are the best.

I saw 3 half crosses 1st gen and two was said to be not good enough, which made me very reluctant to take my 2nd gen half cross,the one i had shared the same cattle dog stud to the different greyhounds and from what i noticed mine was racier and had a smaller head/ narrower althoe had the same cattle dog looks

Caterpillars Half Cross put over Bearinators Greyhound bitch is quite high up on my short list for choice of pup later this year.

The only problem my half cross has ever given me is he got old to fast, ten years in August !

He's been my perfect dog, if I could of taken a wish list and poured it into a mould I couldn't of got it any better.  ive a three quarter bitch standing now but he's not upto the task, what's out there worth using  ? It's late in the day but if you don't ask, you don't get. I'm so invested in this dog I've never really considered using anything else.

I do know of a full ACD stud but would you think it'd be to heavy going back to a three quarter greyhound  ?

Tried it five times,  three times over a greyhound bitch that had produced some very good stuff for my lad. Sadly I didn't get anything,  I had him sperm tested,  her progesterone tested and still got nothing.  I was kindly given this bitch to try and get something from him but I've already tried her over two seasons and still nothing.  I'm admitting defeat,  it's pointless trying,  I could try AI one last time but I can't see the point.

Never once had a problem with his feet, show him something once and he knows it for life. He's marked me foxes  all his life, caught a few rabbits along the journey to, he's been a joy to own. He'll be a hard act to follow
