trappa 518
Hector Lombard has just signed for the UFC. I should say that will be SIlvas next fight if he beats Cheal. Its good that bellator is getting some kudos but wish the ufc would have a look at our judo jim. I think he would do well if he stepped up to the big league. Cant see lombard getting a title shot straight away mind, there are a couple of fighters in front of him in the queue surely (our man bisping for starters, palhares is up there too) but ye, he will only be 1 or 2 wins away for a title shot. gnasher16 30,494
Just watched UFC 1 + 2 last night (DVD from eBay). How times have changed in a short space of time!! I remember back in the early 90,s when " cage fighting " or " no rules fighting " was first spoke about over here the excitement in gyms was unbelievable......a real fight in a controlled environment without getting nicked it was hats off to the yanks for having the guts to stand up for their sport........ But ever since they have pussied out and tried to have one foot on either side of the fence introducing a hundred different rules giving in to media/public pressure.........i think the original attraction of the sport was the fact it was pretty much a real fight but the amount of folk ive seen lose interest in it over the years.......its at the point now where to me its virtually a " trend " not a sport.......you see some of the fighters coming through its like their second day in the gym they rush out and get the obligatory go faster tattoos, gumshield, clothing, music etc....then return to the gym to train to be a fighter.......its no more a real fight than any other combat sport is the fact they now call it mma instead of what it started out as is a complete compromise on the whole sport......and that Dana White prick should have been booted long ago the most powerful man in the sport standing swearing and talking like a teenager he has no class whatsoever.....idiots like that Rampage Jackson are cringeworthy and keep the sport only slightly above soppy boys wwf wrestling..... Its a shame because once all the nonsense is over with its a very pure sport for the 5 minutes of a round..............its just all the other bollocks and image building crap that keeps traditional old has beens like me from keeping up with it
moonlighter 1,164
I've heard of judo Jim. He trains a lad I know from Boston. He's on you tube; matt Hallam Mma. Also look on YouTube at; ADCC and palhares is on there!
moonlighter 1,164
Gnasher it's bigger than boxing in the states and will stay that way now. I think it's down to the fact that the best fight the best. No one ducks anybody and there are not 5 heavy weight champs who only fight in the town where they were born. Thats yanks for you they dont know whether to shit piss or have a haircut !.........but if you think mma will ever be bigger than boxing on a worldwide scale then your living in dreamland................the days of big black yank heavyweight boxers is over they are all going into american football as the money is so much greater........if mma was such a great sport worldwide they wouldnt have this need to hype it up so much and turn it from one sport to another in such a short time.........apart from the amount of rounds boxing is exactly the same sport it was 100 years ago..... cage fighting/mma is not even close to the sport it was less than 20 years ago. Dont get me wrong im a fan of all the combat sports i think mma has its talents and great fighters its just all the crap and idiots it seems to attract........some fighters shine through more than others kids like them Diaz boys i think are fantastic examples of what the sport has to offer they are not only talented but are true fighters in their heart they dont look comfortable around a press conference or interviewer they just love to fight......yet others all they want is a camera in their face and the attention to build up their image without realising all the soppy tattoos and catchy phrases in the world wont make them any more of a fighter.....but i guess its how the sport is now like i say for the 5 minutes activity of a round i think its a great sport just everything else i find repulsive. moonlighter 1,164
It's not a dream world. It's down to pay per view figures and bums on seats in 2010/2011. I read an article on it in a magazine carnt remember the figures but it made interesting reading. Another interesting fact that the 2nd biggest sporting event is the K1 grand prix final, the first been the world cup final. It's held in a 90000 seater stadium and god knows how many on tv. No boxing match has ever come close.
gnasher16 30,494
No boxing match has ever come close to what ? no obviously 90,000 people cant watch a fight in a 20 foot square ring.........Your talking about pay per view telly......come on be sensible if Ali/Frazier was taking place this weekend you really think it would be outwatched by Jones/Evans As regards most watched sports mma isnt in the top ten worldwide, boxing i think is around 6 or 7.......I believe the most watched event in sporting history was the 2008 Olympics opening ceremoney......i know the India v Pakistan cricket match some years ago was some ridiculous figure of viewers.......the yanks superbowl........ The combat sports are way down the list.......mma although an up and coming sport is nowhere near at the heights boxing is worldwide....compare the earnings for a start ! moonlighter 1,164
The k1 final is in the Tokyo dome and they sell 90000 tickets. And it is the 2nd most watched single sporting event, in front of the super bowl and cricket. Unless they got there facts wrong. There are over a million pay per view sales too, more than any Tyson fight. Mma is not at that scale, but in the last 2 years it's out sold boxing in USA. The only thing that dosnt compare is the fighter pay packets. Boxers win that hands down.
moonlighter 1,164
As much as I love boxing, I'm fed up of waiting for the big fights to happen. How long have we been waiting for PAC man v mayweather! I'm fed up of reading about it.... But if it does happen I'll be buying that fight for sure.

I cant prove it but i think your wrong about k1...........but then it is aimed at the most densely populated countries in the world so it could be.......even so......Chavez v Camacho or Haugen i forget who back in the 90,s was the biggest crowd for any kind of fight at 138,000.......Ali v Spinks was the biggest ever indoor crowd at odd thousand.......Jack Johnson and Jack Dempsey fights regularly got 100k+ open air....... Surely if your mma was as popular as you believe, it would be being staged in big open air venues like the big boxing matches and paying multi million pound purses.....lets face it the sport of mma is only really hugely popular in America......but then not as popular as wwe wrestling according to tv ratings, which kind of tells you a lot about the yanks mentality to competetive sport !
