Guest Ditch_Shitter
4oz, 10 oz ? Weight and so, usually, thickness of the twine used to make the nets, mate. Let me put it this way: In really Old Days - before any of us was born - they made twines out of Hemp. (Yes; Cannabis plant fibre. Dope into Rope). Being vegetative, it had to be dried, after use, or it rotted. Just as compost does. So, if ye inadvertantly got a bit of dew, frost water or rain on ye hemp nets and then stuck them back in ye bag and hung that bag of dampened nets on the hook in ye shed? Next time a bun hit one, it was as likely to burst right through. Not good! What was / is good is that hemp fibre, woven into the form of a purse net, lends a certain 'perfect' level of 'stiffness'. They hang just so and purse up around the bun just so. This concept of 'stiffness' may take some getting ye head round, if ye've never handled such nets. But carry that thought for a minute ..... Then, half a life time ago, someone came up with the idea of using Nylon thread to make purse nets. Only they used 'Shiney' and extremely thin nylon thread. I guess they reasoned that nylon is so bloody strong that they could get away with the thinnest thread. Only problem being that nylon is also extremely Light - at that thinness - and has absolutely no 'stiffness'. It's as limp as water, in fact. So that's where we guys, accustomed to handling heavier, stiffer hemp nets met " Nylon ". We, by and large, detested the shit! Drape a hemp net over a hole and it would sort of self support itself. Forming a screen which was, shall we say, 'Central'. I.e. It was like a horizontal wall and thus, the moment Bun's nose touched it, he was driving against it and causing the start of the nets pursing. Nylon nets ~ the early, thin, light ones ~ however tended to hang like an old womans tits. Flump! Bloody things just followed gravity and tended to pool at the lowest point. They allowed no finnesse in setting and, having done ye best with the wretched things, a passing thought could cause them to slip across their own shiney, slippery fibres and collapse in a heap at the foot of the bury mouth. There the slippery threads would slide through themselves and leave ye with an unholy tangle of net and bits of debrie. F*cking horrible things! That's my experiance of them anyway. And those would have been the lightest weight nylon nets. I',m sure they had their uses ~ like on golf course putting greens! Now we've had Spun Nylon for about a quarter of a century. We also have far heavier Nylon nets. 10 oz indeed? Blimey! I've never tried those. Maybe someone else could comment? Much more of this and we'll have a THL Book of Purse Nets on the go!
