milegajo 595
Am thinking up plans... There are so many guns out there and it's all very well handling them in the shop but what if you could 'borrow' one for a couple of days/a week/a month? I say borrow as I imagine there would be hellish amounts of red tape to wade through if you used the word rent. Privately could work though... Lets say you have a gun surplus. I have a 97k (not for much longer i don't think). You're interested in them. Perhaps unsure about the weight in the field... You wanna borrow it. You pay transport/collect both ways. We sign an agreement to protect both parties if felt necessary. Perhaps you might be so grateful that you bung the chap a tenner or something...a night with the mrs ...i dunno I don't really mean this as a business model, rather a way airgunners can not only network and interact but also not have to rely on (and even get misled by) reviews. I know I'm a touchy feely kinda guy (perhaps don't offer me time with the mrs ) It doesn't have to be just guns, what about scopes? range finders? NV kit? I have a set up lying here doing nothing until I can afford a pcp. Donations would be welcome! Lol But definitely not required. PM Me if interested. It's a Sony handycam plus mount plus ir illuminator etc. Bought and cobbled together from eBay and websites for under £100, if thats something you're considering or you have a job on soon and can't justify the expense it may be useful. Would be good to keep things amongst THL for trust etc but no need to be nasty and exclusive. Thoughts? Offers!? Edited April 19, 2012 by milegajo Quote Link to post
secretagentmole 1,701
Unfortunately as you are well aware we have a couple of thieving vultures who hang around this site, who keep trying to peddle non existent weaponry to the members and claim they still own guns when they sold them many moons ago after being given them for "their daughter!". I can imagine you packing your 97 up and sending it to Gloucester, only for them to claim they never got it, sent it back on an unsigned for etc etc. The idea is a non starter, if someone is keen on a gun they will find a way to try one, trust me! milegajo 595
Hmmm true it could be abused. Sad. But true. I don't agree it's a non starter. Or perhaps i just don't want to! Quote Link to post
open season 21
Sadly bud i agree with secretagentmole mate i dont think it would take off i lent a chap i know, an airrifle and they had taken the rifle to bits and not told me and left it half cocked when i got it back, and this is some one i know. so sending a rifle around the country mate i dont think it would work it could be costly for the lender and there might be an element of safety to bud. sad to say mate in theory good idea but in reality not good sorry mate Quote Link to post
milegajo 595
In truth I hate lending people my stuff lol. Upon reflection, sensitive electronics is perhaps a no no and asking for trouble and ill will. I'd of thought an iron clad agreement should cover both parties... Ah well, maybe not.. Mawders 595
In principle it sounds like an awesome idea, in reality it's far from realistic. I wouldn't dream of sending someone my rifle to borrow, the slightest scuff or scratch would drive me up the wall. My rifles not perfect as its second hand but I really do look after my stuff. Couldn't bare knowing someone might be dropping my rifle! Quote Link to post
milegajo 595
Well my scenario was 3 rifles, one man. One knock about, one casual, one formal/wedding suit. I figured I'd be happy to lend knock about and casual as they only occasionally came out of the wardrobe. I definitely wouldn't expect people to lend out their pride and joys. It would have been a nice idea if I'd thought of it prior to selling them! Quote Link to post
robwelsh 354
I wouldn't mind being on a day out and letting some have use of my gun ..but you got another thing coming if someone asked to borrow it accross country ..I love my little huntsman..they day I took a chunk in my butt ,by a stirrup pump swinging on my back I could of knocked myself out..nevermind some stranger doing it..as I say, no problems being there with them like a Hawke lol but sending them off just smells of trouble ,arguments, and even violence haha Quote Link to post
whippet 99 2,613
it wont work , ive lent mates air rifles , they just get abused, scratched etc and then theres the controvercy to follow, eg it was like that when you gave it to me. when you buy a gun in the shop they take your details and if you lend a gun to a mate and an offence has been comitted , can your self get in tropuble as the gun is registered to you. (i know its not an illegal obligation to register to the consumer). how would you feel if you lent an air rifle to a friend and his child shot it self, would easily kill them. you know what some folk are like having no respect for fire arms. leaving them in the bedroom loaded etc etc, it would never work Quote Link to post
milegajo 595
So an air rifle is truly a second wife in every respect...that's the message i'm getting. How liberal of me haha. (No, i don't lend mates my mrs. Not for free anyway...) Quote Link to post
matt_hooks 188
Whippet, you're mistaken about you committing an offence if the weapon is misused by someone you've lent it to. As long as they are aged 18 or over, you can lend away. Air rifles are uncontrolled. There is no licence, there is no register, nobody knows if you own a particular air rifle and they can be freely transferred from one person to another with no legal formalities. That said, posting a valuable commodity to a stranger to "try it out" sort of goes against the grain. I'd love to think I could trust people enough (and there are those on here I would happily trust with my life, let alone my rifle) but strangers? No thanks! A cheap air rifle is £100, that's a good chunk of money for someone to risk losing. Sadly I don't think the idea is a goer. That said, at the various meets and get-togethers, people should definitely bring their spare rifles for others to have a go on! Quote Link to post
robwelsh 354
Totally agree..if I sent my gun off and done walkies by some prick on here..to replace it would cost me a grand..I would be pissed off with loosing a tenner nevermind what iv just said lol soon as they put a grand in my bank I'd let them use it ..but Untill that day comes along , which it wouldn't Il quite happily just stick to my guns haha Quote Link to post
