testicle inside dog

My dog only has 1 testicle dropped and the other inside. got a quote of the vets for castration and the price varies depending where the other testicle is inside him. also been adviced not to breed off him due to it being past on to pups. would the castration effect his prey drive? he is a 16month old lurcher and had a great first season and was just wondering is it would have a big diffrence on him for next season.

Complete castration is not necessary: they can just remove the retained testicle, leaving the normal one in place, but you'd have to be very damn sure that your vet realises exactly what you want before the operation or they'd want to remove both: vets are so accustomed to castrating that they'd do it on autopilot, and you'd need to have their agreement in writing, preferably written in their own blood to make sure that you didn't end up with a totally castrated dog.

 

If ever you wanted to breed from the dog one testicle will work fine, and his pups won't necessarily have retained testicles.

Thats good to know. The way the vets have been going on you have to cut both off and never breed off them. would of been a shame becuse he been a great dog up to now would like the oportunity of a pup in a few years off him. thanks for advice.

if you can feal the other testicle inside the body massage may help it drop .. it is a genetic fault .last resort have the retained testicle removed , there is a chance of cancer developing , total castration is not nessesary , the fault can be passed on by dogs ;;or bitches ;and really shouldnt be bred from

My dog only has the one that dropped. When he was a pup and getting checked at the vets the first vet told me that an op to remove the bollock was a must and to avoid cancer i should have it done.... I went back when he was a little older, got another vet and he told me to go away and not worry about it. Yes there is a chance of cancer but so does every dog and more likely it would be when he was a fair age and lived his life anyway.

So i chose not to get an op done on a pup....he is a cracking dog, No reverse gear and i'll doubt if i'll ever have another one like him. He has sired a litter of pups and both dogs have there bollocks down............

Ive been given prices ranging from 120 plus. sounds like a good dog lab-tastic and glad to hear about the pups. Think i mite just see how it goes then because dosent seem to cause him any problems.

the point the vet is trying to make is that the undescended testicle is more likely to turn into a tumour as they are not supposed to be at body temperature, which is why most mammals keep them outside the body. Its up to you whether you are willing to take the chance with your dog, but its unfair to risk passing it on to pups as it can be hereditary. Saying my dog didn't pass it on to his pups so go ahead and breed is like saying my granny smoked all her life and died of natural causes so its safe to smoke. Undescended testicles is an unsoundness like any other.

i decided to get the one that hasent dropped out and i am going to book in with a vet tomorow. As for breeding with him i havent decided what to do but i got a long time to decide weather i will or not as not going to untill he is around 3/ 4 years.

Might sound strange but.my dads staff years back had one bollock inside him..the vet told him to massage his bollocks lol I'd rather that than chopping them off..and it worked
