bitten

Advice would be greatfully recieved. I have 2 male terriers a lakey and a russell they get on ok the occasional tear up but more noise than anything else. I keep them indoors i know some of you would frown upon this but they go with me everywhere. I had a problem last night: the smoke alarm went off and the dogs were going mad my wife who is nine months pregnant was waving a tea towel under the smoke alarm and the russell jumped up and nipped my wifes back. i shouted at the russell and made him submit with all this comotion going on the next thing i knew he went for me i scruffed him on the back of the neck but in seconds he bit me probalby 6 times on my arms each time he has drawn blood he has made a bit of a mess of my arms. I din't back down from the dog and got hold of him and made him submit he knew he done wrong and cowars down to me. i dont have the option of keeping him outside. everyone is advising me to re home him as he could go for the baby but i would be gutted to do this as they mean so much to me.

He is the younger of the two 16months old he is aggressive with other male dogs and unlike the first dog i havent put as much effort into training him. Do you think this is too late or if i pull my finger out and go back to the drawing board with his training is there any hope. Thanks guys kentlad

Your dog doesn't know its place, simple as that. If your wife is due a baby i'd either crate the dog or kennel it. Next time the smoke alarm goes off and the dog could latch onto the babies face. Its not simple to sort via computer, i'd crack on with extra training and work on its dominance. I'm pretty easy going but would NEVER accept being bittien by my own dog in circumstances like a smoke alarm going off..........

i would get rid. i wouldent risk a new born child for anything...it only has to happen once and its to late get rid

i would have the dog put to sleep mate.for it to bite you and your mrs whats to say the baby wont be next.dont take the risk no dogs worth the saftey of your family

thanks for the replies. The crate is a fantastic idea. I spoke to a friend via the phone and he instantly suggested the same, he also said the dogs are taking the piss and dont know their place in the pecking order the crate will be used at night etc. i feel realy disapointed with myself and would have bet my mortgage that neither of my dogs would ever have bitten me. but it goes to show how in certain situations you just never know. I am glad in a way this has happened to me and not my wife or my new baby when she arrives. Thanks oneredtrim i have enrolled in a class this morning an eight week course, he has three other aggressive dogs in the group of ten so will be a good mix. also he will be away from the other dog and unfamilar surroundings so hopefully will calm him. It goes to show the damage a strong young terrier can do in a matter of seconds. it is last chance saloon for him i would put him down if i felt id given 100percent to training but i feel i owe him one last chance. regards

i would have the dog put to sleep mate.for it to bite you and your mrs whats to say the baby wont be next.dont take the risk no dogs worth the saftey of your family

i aggree with you tod , as far as i am concerned if a dog bites the hand that feeds it then that dog has to be put to sleep

As a short term arrangement the crate is fine.But once the baby gets on the move,you've got trouble.I've got 3 kids and i would'nt tolerate it.The risk is too great-the baby comes first. Personally I find bitches are far better with kids.

You've got to listen to you're head not you're heart on this one!

Had a similar problem, however it did not result in the events you have encountered. My JR was snappy (as most are) however on two occasions he bit my son's hand, the first time not badly but caused a number of small puncture marks, the second was far worse inflicting a bad bite to the thumb. Up until that time my son and JR were inseparable. What changed, my JR matured and was no longer a pup and thought himself higher up in the pecking order in the Smudger household. The decision was not easy, but living with the possible results of a more savage attack made the decision easier.

Like Stabs says kennels seems like the best course,or if everything else fails have his nads off,not ideal but better than having a dog that you cant trust with your family.

BIN THERE AND BACK AT THE MOMENT I HAVE 2 YOUNG DOGS THAT WILL FIRE INTO EACH OTHER AT THE DROP OF A HAT BOTH TRYING TO BE TOP DOG BUT ILL CRUE THEM AS FOR THE JR SPEND TIME WITH IT TRAIN IT AND IF YOU CAN PUT IT OUT SIDE IN A KENNEL WERE HES GOT HIS OWN SPACE AND WHEN YOUR BABY IS BORN LET THE DOGS SEE IT SMELL IT AND GET USED TO IT BUT NEVER LEAVE THEM WHERE THEY CAN GET TO IT IF YOU HAVE ANY DOUDTS THEN I AM AFRAID ITS THE OLD LEAD INJECTION YOU CANT TAKE THE CHANCE. WHEN MY DAUGHTER WAS BORN EVERYBODY TOLD ME THE DOGS WOULD HAVE TO GO ESPECIALY THE GERMAN SHEPARD BUT WHEN SHE CAME HOME FROM THE HOSPITAL I LET ALL THE DOGS IN AND [TREAT FOR THEM ] LAID MY DAUGHTER ON THE FLOOR AND ONE BY ONE I INTRODUCED THEM TO EACH OTHER THEN WHEN I WAS SURE I LET THEM ALL HAVE A SNIFF AROUND I REPEATED THIS MOST DAYS FOR THE FIRST WEEK AND THOSE DOGS GOT TO HER AND WOULD DEFEND HER TO THE LAST. WHEN SHE WAS ADOUT 2 SHE LEARNT TO UNLOCK THE FRONT DOOR AND ESCAPE TO THE PLAY AREA AND MY GERMAND SHEPARD WOULD CLEAR THE 8 FT WALL AROUND OUR HOUSE WITH EASE AND THIS WAS THE ONLY TIME S HE EVER JUMPED THAT WALL BUT YOU WOULD FIND HIM WITH HER LAY NEXT TO THE SWINGS WATCHING EVERY MOVE HE NEVER WENT FOR ANYBODY JUST STUCK BY HER THE LOOK OF HIM WAS ENOUGH TO PUT YOU OFF GOING NEAR HER AND THEY WERE ALLWAYS THE BEST OF MATES WHEN HE HAD TO BE PUT DOWN DUE TO CANCER IT BROKE HER HEART AND SHE SORT OF GAVE UP AND GOT QUITE ILL AND THE OTHER DOGS HOWLED FOR DAYS AFTERWARDS BUT IAM GLAD TO SAY SHE AS RIGHT AS RAIN NOW AND JUST PASSED HER DRIVING TEST TODAY [ GOD HELP US] 1ST TIME

surly a dog that has bitten not once but twice in the house will do it again no matter where its kept..remembering that its bitten the person who has to go in feed it , walk it etc, i know its a hard desicion but it has to be made..
