Nice one Si, its funny mow many people have cottoned on to how easy it is to produce your own NV using cheep ebay parts and a bit of nouse. I have been mucking about since before Christmas and I’m really enjoying myself.

I do have an NS50 that I use but really like old school lamping as well so have built a couple of spotters that I use in conjunction with a Tracer Ledray.

Recently I have put together a set up that I have been using for “static lamping” of rabbits and rats with good results. Its basically a wireless version of the setup I use to shoot rats in the garden but uses a wireless IR camera that I place close to the desired kill zone and a receiver I plug into a screen. This allows me to sit back and see whets going on without flicking the gun lamp on and off until it is required. I have various battery sizes but the big ones in thee pic give me well over 24 hours of use including recording to the small HD unit on the right.

I have also used it to check out potential “hot spots” by leaving it running over night and reviewing the recording at high speed the next day, this is made even more useful by time and date stamping the recording. Im still just mucking about at the moment but the whole setup will be cased up and cammoed when I’m happy with it.

Sorry but the only video I have at the moment was taken in the garden but you get the idea. If you look closely you can see the red glow of the Ledray as I flick it on just before taking the shot, this was filmed in pitch black……….and PLEASE DON’T ANYBODY TELL ME THAT’S A MOUSE!!!!!!

By the way Si that camera you are using is really strong and durable so don’t be bothered about getting it wet, I have had one operating outside for months in all weathers and it hasn’t missed a beat. I liked it so much the wireless one I’m playing with at the moment is the same make and has been left outside in the rain loads of times. Also, did you know zoom lenses are available, if you look at my pic I have put one in the foreground so you can see what they look like.

Hi Si, it’s a fixed magnification but I cant remember what as I got it from Ebay and the bloke I got it from only had the one, its not printed on. It focuses by screwing in and out of the camera body as all lenses do on these devices.

 

If you want something a bit better quality than my lens these are the people to contact but they don’t sell cheep crap so their prices reflect it.

I hope you don’t mind me jumping in here Si but I have a bit of experience with these reversing cameras mind I must say not exactly that make.

When I started mucking about with NV my brother had the same idea as you and got one from the Bay. On arrival it immediately became clear it was not up to the job of a NV spotter. They are designed to operate over a very short distance and as such the field of view of the camera and NV capabilities were very poor.

this one isnt a reversing camera its a dash board camera with wide angle and a 1/4 chip for 16 quid it might be worth a shot obviously more ir will be needed. heres a reveiw om a simlar one it looks ok to me .

If you really want to make your digi spotter good and use for rabbits too then I seriously suggest you get a added IR illuminator.

 

I added 48 IR led's today and I have just tested mine with a witness with me and I am now getting 40 metres comfortably now Gods honest.

 

Ill do a video of it in action very soon.

 

This is what mine looks like now.
