jeemes 4,485
They'd only be worth a lot of money if the line was tried and tested and does particularly well in the field. I can trace my rough coated line back to the 70s, but it wasn't me breeding them until the late 80s. I wouldn't say that they are special in any particular way, just nice enough working lurchers that suit me and not bad at a variety of jobs. Any dog is only worth what the buyer is prepared to pay for it. how many times have you outcrossed since the 's?? I suppose I couldn't actually claim they are a line as such, because they've always been out crossed. The closest mating I did was cousin to cousin. So I guess I should call them a family rather than a line. After all, doesn't a line mean that a certain amount of close breeding has occurred? yes.Really to say you have a strain or line all the dogs in the kennel will have to be related.Although I suppose a lot of lurchers are probably related through the greyhound blood,as there are not many greyhounds in the country or even the world that are not related. bunnys 1,228
iI SUPPOSE line breeding from best to best will take some beating has could has said like to like , but at some stage the outcrossx will need to be used to keep the line strong , scatter breeding can give the goods if bred best tobest , but family traits are bestgotten by locking in the desirable genes one his looking for , by breeding tight from the very best . atb bunnys. tia.kins 56
Tracing lines is brilliant. I like to know, and admire folk with the same desire! But don't breed just because your dogs have got a certain line your claiming credit from that was generations back. There needs to either be some consistency in the lines performance or some good recent performance! I don't get why folk quote dogs that are years gone by when advertising their pups! I am as guilty as the next man, fallen for the same trap, but between the diog of legend an the dogs of today from one line could have seen several cart horses in between ! Keep things moving forward and think for the future. Lines are a bit of history....and simply nice to know 1 Quote Link to post
