Rabbit netting

Recommended Posts

Longnetting is almost certainly worth the effort, but don't imagine that you'll always get large numbers of rabbits . It's as enjoyable as shooting , fishing, or any other country pursuit , and like those the outcome is not always a guaranteed success. Daytime longnetting with ferrets is reasonably straightforward, but takes time to master handling the nets. Night time longnetting is another story, and far more difficult as everything is done in darkness, so the net handling ability is crucial, as are field craft skills. There are several excellent books that cover longnetting, and they are well worth a read if you are serious about learning the art.

And practise, practise, practise,is a real key it takes time before you can drop a net quietly, and efficiently it is well worth the effort but you can allso get low bags,do your home work,on the ground you intend to net, make sure all the access points are clear and easy to get through, any gates are well oiled and not squeaky, take note if the area has alot of light polution, which can make approach tricky, watch your weather very carefully, get a map of the fields and mark true north on it, and the hedge you intend to net, check the weather closely, when you see the wind is in your favour move, and dont hesitate you want a good dark night and the wind in your face, dont take people who you think are going to make too much noise, take someone you know you can work with, or you will have an arguement, dont risk both going to set the net one man do that on his own, leave the other guy well out of way, until the net man signals the drive to start, its up to you how you signal, a mobile phone text would do if you can keep the light from escaping your jacket, small cheap 2 way radio,

One of the most important things is your driver if he moves too quickly,he can cause all sorts of problems the trick is to get the rabbits to hit the net hard, but not all at once, some people hear all the squealing and their pace picks up, and you find they start to quarter less of the field, pushing the rabbits out the side instead of pushing them forward, some times its better to do your own driving to be honest only you to blame,I allways wanted to train a net dog to do this,I have only ever known one which was my farthers back in the early 70's would love to know how he trained it,I dont do much longnetting at night now but I can tell you I found it exhilerating,my mate said he wanted to have a go this year,so I am currently sorting all my longnets out ready, I wish you well hope you master it good luck,
