me and my mate have had 3 hobs give up after a kicking from rabbits he had a big silver hob that worked 4 times a week for 2 years then at the start of its 3rd season he got kicked about and refused to even go to ground after that. the other 2 just wouldnt go into the deepest parts of a sett and eventually just gave up even working the upper parts of a sett. the 2 ive got now are working really well ones just been retired he,s 7 now ive just lined my best bitch with him to breed a replacment for him just hope he,s not to old

Some good honest replies on here lads and lases , it's all so good having days out with other like minded ferreters sharing knowledge and measuring up stock it's a real eye opener and sorts the wheat from the chaf , but I supose like everything if you don't see other stuff in action your not aware of what you've got , or some people don't allways want to see : )

We where out yesterday ran a rabbit to ground in a twelve ,fourteen holer netted up popped in two ferrets nothing happened for ages then the usual shout theres nothing there . After about fifteen minutes got a reading yards away from the burrow three foot down wee jill had a rabbit in the middle of a pipe . Its one that was bought in as a kit another season under her belt and i would bred from that jill

the bairn found a jill in the street, she is dumb as a post and had a few medical problems when she went to the vet, so ended up getting her spade whilst she had surgery.big mistake she's a great work, better than my other jill by a country mile!!! and my hobs only done his first season but isnt too bad so far.needless to say im not having kits so im on the prowl for a couple extra jills soon.i will drive a to most places to get what i want, but if i can get there and back in a day i dont think i would do it

About six years ago I found myself without a jill, I seen an add in the paper selling young Jills spoke to the young boy that was selling them and all sounded good well handled ect; I done the 35 mile trip to buy one and the bloody thing bit me as I took her off him.

She took some handling to get her quiet but she did calm down eventually. I worked her lightly for the first season small warrens that I knew that were occupied. Her second season she started to work some of the larger warrens and would always bolt rabbits, No messing around at the mouth of the holes just straight down and out when the warren was empty. In her third year she was working warrens upto 30 odd holes on her own and would not come out if there was a rabbit left in there. In her 3 years I cannot remember her killing at all, she just had the knack of bolting them.

I had not bred ferrets for 20 odd years, but decided because she was so good to breed from her. I had a smallish hob who worked well, but not in the same class as the Jill, and bred her with him. She only had 4 kits, 2 of each, unfortunatly she died when the kits were 4 weeks old. I hand reared the kits but none of them, while all workers, come anywhere near as good as their mother. I have one jill left from that litter the rest have been given away.

Sometimes I think, that even when you try your hardest to get the best bred to the best, it just does not work out as planned.

Thanks for the offer Jamie it is appreciated. I have a small Jill here that was handed in (Well sort of) she had been found wandering along a footpath near to where the daughter was working, she phoned me and when I went to see what they had found, I found a small albino Jill that had been lost and was muzzled.

The muzzle I had a hell of a job to cut it off her it was on that tight.

Tucking in to a leg of pheasant her first meal in god knows how long.

. This Jill has turned out to be a good worker, but it beggers belief that people are still using muzzles in this day and age.
