Views sought on control of hares

The Law Commission is currently conducting a review of wildlife management legislation for the Government. This includes the fact that although there are some minimal restrictions on the control of hares on moorland and unenclosed land, and on the sale of hares at certain times, there is no real close season.

As a result, Defra has contacted the CLA to seek its views in advance of any proposed changes to the law. It has also stated it would welcome views on possible measures to minimise the adverse welfare impacts on hares whilst recognising the need for control in certain areas at critical times and how appropriate welfare standards might be achieved.

If you would like to contribute your views on this issue, please email us by Friday 13 April.
