Massage is the real benefit I am sure, and doing it correctly is what its all about, I think the rub or oil just helps to make things easier and some may have theraputic effect.

It's still a pain to use a oil based rub on a hairy dog.

when i was working with driving horses we were always tol "walk em out and walk em back" to warm the horses up and cool down for 15 or 20 mnutes at a walk before putting them to hard work or unharnessing. same with dogs, good warm up and cool off works wonders. and i've only ever used a towel for a good rub or bare hands for a slow more penetrating massage. dont thibk oils, embrocation etc do much for a dog. they have limited blood supply to the skin anyway, compared to a human

embrocation works by irritating the skin, thus increasing blood flow to the skin. Now this blood comes straight to the skin from other parts of the body, it does nothing to increase heat or blood flow to the muscle infact it may even take blood away from the muscle to supply the extra blood to the skin.

 

Would have a heat source next the the muscle from the linament ie the skin, perhaps still cause heat to get to the muscle faster though? A bit like standing in front of a fire, the heat is not directly in my skin but my skin heats up from the heat in front of it?

Don't know, but chances are it doesn't even create heat in a dog, they don't have pores like us ,they don't sweat remember. In my book ,heat lamp for recovery and gentle exersize for a warm up. I wouldn't rub any of that shite on my dog. If folks think it works, thats up to them but I just don't buy it.

It's just my bone man....who is a running dog GOD Will say to rub in linament for certain things yet oil only for other things. So he obviously knows the difference between what will work for something and not for others?
