Guest Rabbiteer Posted May 9, 2007 Report Share Posted May 9, 2007 Took my pup (LittleTed) out for a stroll with Chalkwarren and Honey today. Am really impressed how my boy is coming on and the experiance of running about with Honey has done him the world of good. Chalkie wanted to take me to this special valley which apparently had thousends of rabbits in it. But unfortunatly when we got there it was looking convincingly void of wildlife. To which he said stand still and I will call them to come out. I have to admit when he said this I thought he was taking the P*ss out of me. But sure enuff, only after 10 secs calling, 5 rabbits popped out in to the open in the valley infront of us. I have to admit I was impressed. We moved a couple of hundred metres forward and he did it again. This time he got a rabbit to run straight towards us and the two dogs. When the rabbit got within 10m it realised it's mistake and legged it to a hole. Again his vile shrill attracted numerous rabbits all over the banks in front of us. And to top it all, On the way back from the pub he pointed out a large manner house which has a slight problem with rabbits. We popped our heads over the fence and tried to count the rabbits, but it was proving hard work so he called again and instantly had three rabbits run down the path towards us. I have to say I was Fecking gobsmacked as he walked away smiling at me. I practiced it so much in the car my lips are hurting now. Fecking amazing I tell you......................... Guest oldskool Posted May 9, 2007 Report Share Posted May 9, 2007 i dont think its really callin them in as much as it is scarin them into all directions... then a few will head towards you as a fluke... i know a place where i call in the odd fox, i found that they would come in so far and then piss off in the other direction ... i thought that they were catching wind of me but then i discovered it was because of the echo that could be heard in the distance ... when they got so far they would come back in again... maybe there was an echo sounding behind the rabbits and it was scaring them up towards you??? Guest Ditch_Shitter Posted May 10, 2007 Report Share Posted May 10, 2007 Far be it for me to interject in a thread so focused on the abilities of a Master Rabbit Catcher, but Oldskool's comments have provoked me ~ even though I thought to mention the following, as soon as I just saw the title of the thread: A life time ago, when I was a nipper, I bought - as youngsters do - a practically useless piece of kit. A Crow Call. I'm actually reasonably certain, in hindsight, it may have been an ACME bloody crow call! (Yes; Wylie Coyote fans may well snigger too! ) Now, what I'm about to relate here I've spoken of before, at least the once on this very forum. But it bears repeating and may also help shed some light on all this. This call, when blown through, made a sound like a crow. As ye'd expect. Bite down a bit and blow? The instructions said the noise ye'd get then was a young crow. Bite harder and blow? That, they said, was a " Distressed Rabbit ". Now, I make no bones about it; I'd never, at that point in my life, heard a rabbit scream. I'd never caught one! How the hell would I know? But I bit and blew and this thing produced a high, loud " Wheeeeeeeeahee sort of sound. (My best stab at typing what I remember!). Come to think of it, looking back, it probably wasn't a bad imitation of a bunny screaming at all. Anyway, to the point of all this: I was wandering around Farlington Marshes one day, in broad daylight, when I spotted a rabbit. With no particular purpose in mind, I put that call in my mouth. Bit and blew. The rabbit sat up! I blew some more and other rabbits showed themselves ..... Did rabbits appear from their burrows, even move toward me? I don't honestly remember. That's the simple truth. But I Do remember thinking, " My god! If I had a gun, they'd all be dead! Because I was standing there, in plain and open view of the buggers, and they were quite simply fasinated by me - or rather, the sounds coming from me. I've never forgotten that experiance. Then, as kids do, I 'lost' the call. Got a gun and have never bought another, ACME or otherwise Crow Call in my life. But there it is. I feel it backs up ~ as if it needs backing! ~ what we've just read there. I'd also personally submit that 'my' rabbits were catagorically Not acting in fear. Fasination? Curiosity? (normally around this time of year and always full grown bunnies) think its called maternal instinct oldskool thats exactly what it is , done it loads of times, this time of year when theres loads of young bunnies and hares about, had adults run full tilt at me from inside cover, when i squeeked at a young rabbit to get it to put its head up for a shot, had a few roe does come in too Quote Link to post Share on other sites
