secretagentmole 1,701
It is that time of year when hunting on my permission is a proverbial pain in the rear end. The rabbits are there to see, but because there is not enough cover, you cannot stalk them, you cannot get close, the ground is flat and even crawling you still present a damned easy target to see. This is why I have an SR reticle scope on my guns, this is why I practise, this is why I have to wait for the perfect day, such a perfect day, I'd like to share it with you!!!! Conditions overcast, windspeed zero, wind direction, seeing as there is no windspeed what the heck to do you expect, it was a Nor by Nor West, Sou by Sou East direction.... Rabbits feeding down track, I am on track, hedge by edge lined with brambles, no nettles yet to effect cover, result, you stick out like sore thumb. If crawling you stick out like sore zit and make more noise. I am 2 powerline poles away. I have lasered these, they are 60 metres apart. Carefully walk down edge, trying to merge with brambles but not too closely if you get what I mean. Get to approx metres and 2 rabbits give it legs, one sits up and stares, so I stare at the ground, carefully trying to count blades of grass per square centimetre. Rabbit puts head down and continues to graze. I edge forward slowly, rabbit raises head, I count grass blades. I get to 60 metres and it sits bolt upright, I count carefully, then realise I left the ruler at home so now I will never know... Rabbit puts head down and turns slightly, I have the rifle zeroed to 30 metres. SR12 on the top, check mag, x15, 11.3 foot pound energy using a Crosman Premier Ultra Magnum equals bottom cross line. Carefully I get into the prone position, rabbit turns broadside once more, much better view, off bipod so steady as a rock, line up, pull trigger, thud, rabbit rolls, does a little kick, still, one dead rabbit! I am well pleased with myself so I collect it and return to my hide in the woods. No more action for a couple of hours, but a pigeon comes in to rest, he has been busy eating wheat shoots in the field. I assisted his rest with another high speed sleeping tablet. Pigeon at 15 metres, head shot. On a final tour round I saw three rabbits on the track bordering the wood. Laser said 30 metres, so I lined up Mini Me and once again another rabbit did a rapid roll over. 2 to 1 rabbit to pigeon ratio. This gun prefers fur to feather I swear it! 1 Quote Link to post

secretagentmole 1,701
Thanks guys and Archie I am not swapping the S, I love the S, I hate Bolas bolts, side bolt is the best mechanism! Quote Link to post
milegajo 595
Nice work secretagentmole, my hunting has been most disappointing lately. After popping off four rabbits i've come home empty handed trying to get pigeons. Think i'm going out too late. I have the right trees, lots of poopies underneath, but too many twiglets in the way, only two or three opportunities max, plus inexperience of hold over/under when aiming up... poor me. well done you! Try and prune some of the twigs by shooting them.give you an idea of the hold under required! Quote Link to post
secretagentmole 1,701
Here is a hypothetical question for you. You are cleaning the hypothetical rabbits and the pigeon in your front garden, keeps the fleas from the dogs and the dogs from the rabbits! You hear a mass of cooing and flapping and observe two hypothetical wood pigeons fighting for the seat of supremacy on top of a hypothetical telegraph pole. it is just gone 7am, nobody about. The telegraph pole is in the front garden of the old dear you supply with pigeon pies (she does love pigeon pie). The hypothetical shot if you took it would be parallel to the road and this thing is sat on top of the pole cooing in triumph. Your gun is inside awaiting its cleaning with Legia after use yesterday. Do you take the shot? Weight of hypothetical rabbits, 1lb 14 oz and 2lb 2 oz... Edited April 7, 2012 by secretagentmole Quote Link to post
milegajo 595
I think the old dear would be very hypothetical if she found out you passed up such a golden opportunity. She just loves pigeon pie... Quote Link to post
secretagentmole 1,701
I know, but the problem is that it is adjacent to the road, but at the time there were no road users, so discharging an air rifle would not have made anybody afraid for their own safety, I also swear this particular pigeon is half vulture as it seems to watch most of it's cousins from 8 miles away being plucked and drawn. It is a real wind up merchant, sitting there with a ring of invincibility around it. One day.... Quote Link to post
milegajo 595
No risk to anyone's safety (except of course the pigeon), no problem. Quote Link to post
secretagentmole 1,701
Going to have to try and get it somehow, think I will ask chicken woman down the road if I can shoot in her back garden, I think that is where they are getting feed from, there seems to be a load constantly round hers...
