BEARINATOR 2,867
How gamey are whippets? Depends on the individual dog, pre-ban I've seen some on roe and fox, doubled up though and they did the job Well I can quite believe that.I've got a 6mth old whippet and the terrier influence is plain to see Johnny I'll see if I can put some old footage of them on the comp and upload them to photobucket to post on here , good luck with yours Quote Link to post

booboy2 139
21 year ago i had a full pedigree kc reg show whippet (sykee)he was 23 inches to the shoulder weighed about 40lb he took everything single handed tended to get bit up bad off the foxes through not having the jaw power to finish them fast but never jibbed once the wee pri%k was game as fu%k done a few antlers to but he use to get dragged about and trampled to bits so tried to avoid them so he didnae need time of to heel .20 to 30 rabbits a night was common practice .hares half of what he ran he killed some kwick kills some long long courses .really good for ferreting appart from the fact he had to ferret from a slip as he loved killing ferrets to . there no all like this pal (sykee) was only this good a think because we were out 5 or 6 nights a week and ferreting when we could. these wee dogs are all fast enough for working i think. and there game as fu%k so aslong as your going to put the time in with a whippet a dont think you can go wrong whether its a show or a race one . but theres one thing that made me opt for the show rather than the race one was alot of the race stuff then was small with tiny wee feet that would never have coped with the hard running i was planning on giving my dog so opted for show one .now this is my story bud and these are my thoughts on the show or race line dilema . 1 Quote Link to post
lifelong cumbrian 1,826
I dont think the whippets gameness is in question either from pedigree or bwra racing lines and also they are usually very biddable and have more brains than given credit for. There are some superb whippets on the workingwhippetforum and the people on there are always helpfull to people. I remember a couple of friends of mine working some kc line dogs about 20yrs ago they were terrier lads and they could not speak highly enough of them, game as hell they said and dogs 22" around 38/40lb. I never saw them work but they certainly looked the part. I have seen a few bwra dogs working and they were also game as hell, one dog from marllilion lines was as tough as hell and was a great retriver and would retrive shot birds like a gundog. This dog had a lot of greyhound in its breeding so suffered from knocks a bit but was as game as they come. My young beddy whippet is from bwra lines (sam the man) and its prey drive is great, she is a little small at just over 18" but is a solid 28lb, has plenty length in the back from the geryhound in breeding. My bitch is is 1 1/2" smaller than my mates kc whippet but about 3" longer in the back. When i breed a pup from her i would have hesitation in going to a whippet be it bwra or kc working whippet, i just ferret and a little bit of lamping. I think a whippet is a game, clever and under rated little dog but as i have said just my own preference but i like a little bit of beddy or collie in the mix. Had a beddy whippet from sam the man lines prey drive was fantastic 22ins 38lbs, sadly killed in 2007 she would tackle anything. Did you get your dog from the south elmsall area been trying to contact the guy who bred mine. ATB KIC Quote Link to post
sowhat 1,572
It depends on the lines tbh mate as some may go like a bullet but lack stamina. Take a look at the dam and sire if they have narrow and shallow chests then theres a good chance they will lack the stamina required to give you a days work in the field. A photo of my bitch vixen, Look at the depth of her chest, she'll work all day with the ferrets and go lamping the same night without any problems. Lovely looking dog Mally Quote Link to post

lifelong cumbrian 1,826
Chartpolski it's ped mate. I'm new to whippets. Surely you can build stamina as it gets fitter. How gamey are whippets? Cheers james James pesonally i believe stamina is in the breeding, i've a friend with a race bred ped whippet and it can;t live with vixen or sagar, after 2 hours ferreting it just goes and sits on my jacket as it's had enough mate. where my whippets will work all day. Your dogs are in super condition mate, the work you put into your dogs is there to see. 3 Quote Link to post

Thankyou mate, It's taken me 10 years to get the dogs i've got today and alot of thought and research has gone into there breeding etc. I've made the odd mistake along the way but i'm proud of what i have now. I'm more than happy with them and there ability in the field where it matters. Anyone who's been out with me will tell you that i expect alot from my dogs and expect 100% from them 24/7 and to achieve this you have to spend the time with them, afterall you only get out of a dog what you put into one. They get the best food available and i get the best out of them. 3 Quote Link to post

Just joking, mate ! Cheers. I remember that day well mate as you keep reminding me lol. We've had some good days and nights out in the field havn't we. Especally that night we went out for just a few rabbits and came back witha cassarole (well everything to put in one including the spuds lol). Not just with the dogs either, i'll never forget your face when you shot your first greyleg and then bugger me the next morning you shot your first canada!!!. We've certainly filled a freezer or two on our days/nights out in the field, just how it should be 1 Quote Link to post
